Wondered about Forum member’s experience having cell service only at the lake? Have a cell and a land line at the cabin. Some questions: What happens if you have to call 911 on your cell phone? Can the responders locate your cabin from a cell phone call? What about losing your listing in the printed phone book? Has that been a problem? Any other experiences for cell phone only users would be appreciated. We sure could use the money from dropping the land line.

My cellular signal on PC is so weak that I cannot give up the land line. Dead spot? Crappy phone? Maybe. But in the last 2 years, the AT&T service at my place has gone straight down. Good luck.

As with all celular service, your location means everything.  Verizon (and formerly Altel) have the best overall service around the entire lake area. There are some areas I don't do well.
Dropped my land line a few years ago and have not had any problems.  I've used 911 several times.  Works fine. Though I mention I am calling Tallapoosa whe I get the sherrif's office just to be sure have not bounced out to another tower in another 911 district.
Not surprised about ATT.  I considered them after Verizon took over Altel.  People in Opelika told me to forget it for now, ATT does not have good service at Lake Martin. They were supposed to put up one tower over here last year, haven't heard they have or have not.
Might add, type of phone seems to make a difference. We have HTC smartphones. That phone service is better than regular cell phones our friends have standing right next to us as we've experimented.

We dropped local phone service two years ago and only use cell phones.  Works fine.  We are in the Sandy Creek area but reception is actually better on the lake than at the house but it works well enough.

Mack, I'll bring my Verizon phone to your place and check it out - the only place in the lake area that I don't have service is Equality and 259 headed toward Coosa 20.

If the signal is good as witch to Verizon might be in order....?

Feel free this weekend if you are here, or any other time. I would appreciate that.

I have Verizon and have the problems in the same places on 259 headed to Coosa 20. I attribute it to the hills there. For some reason, there is excellent service at that little cemetery on Coosa 20. My cell phone (an older model) works fine at the lake, but mysteriously, when someone calls my land line from their cell phone, I usually can't pick up the call.

Just so happens I am working from the lake today and just took a break and walked around Bywater to your place...from your front porch the Verizon service is CAFB...Clear As a F#$%^& Bell.  Even on my Crackberry which, in general, has rotten voice quality.

Didn't realize you were so close  - opposite of the usual when it comes to the lake - closer by land than water.

And I wondered about the electified wire....then saw that maybe you are keeping Bambi from eating the shrubs?

Cheers

Hodja

That's good info. I have to walk out on the end of the dock to make a call on my ATT dumb cell. Forget it on the porch under a metal roof. We'll be down this afternoon.
The wire is indeed electrified when it works, trying to keep the deer from gnawing the roses down to the dirt level. You chose a great day for a walk!!

My wife and I both have AT&T Wireless. They may cover 97% of the USA but they forgot about Lake Martin. We have high speed internet access through Charter. We bought a MagicJack for our land line. One end connects to the USB port on your computer and on the other side is a standard phone line connection for any phone. It runs $20 a year for personal phone number, unlimited local, long distance, and voice mail.

Sounds like a possibility for Mack, but would it solve the 911 address problem?

Yes...if installed per instructions, your e-911 address would appear with your emergency call. Magic Jack works fine...can even use a portable phone with it.

Good information to have - thanks.  I might go buy one just to have a backup for the cell phones.

Yes..is fine as a backup since it only works while computer is booted up and a constant tie-in to the internet.

I have T-Mobile @ Home service, via the internet.  Wife and my cel phones hook up to the wireless network.  Calls to home phone, if un answered, are forwarded to my cel.

We are happy clams with this setup. On travel, or during work hours (we both have jobs in town) we don't miss calls, because they come to my cell.

Liabilty is that if the Internet goes down, we have to step outside to use the cell phone.  Bay Pine area. Upside is that in three years + with this setup, we haven't had the Internet down for any extended times.
