TRY TIPPING 20-25%

I keep reading all of the complaints about the poor service and poor food at the various restaurants on the lake.
I have found that it takes three visits to an establishment and there after I always get good food and service.
If I get less than expected service on my first visit, I give two tips. The first is 20=25% and the second is a note explaining that the tip is not for the service I got but for the service I expect next time. I include in that note what I expect.
It always works in three visits or less.
I see people leaving loose change for tips as if they were tipping for a cup of coffee in 1959.
You get what you pay for.

I don't do it that way. Wait staff can be easily confused by tipping that rewards lower standards of performance.
My experience is you will get more of whatever you subsidize.

I always tip my wife 18% and if the meal is great 20%. Works every time.

I hope that on the lake the tip each waiter/waitress makes belongs to them and is not shared in a common pool (split with all the other waiter/waitress's at the end of each shift). That must be the worst concept ever. It takes away any incentive to give excellent personal service. I know lots of places in Montgomery do it that way....

If I get crappy service, I view it as a lack of drive, a lack of training, or both - and would be hard pressed to go for a second trip. We trained our dog with a combination of treats and beatings - I just wonder which would be more effective on waitstaff..

I have to agree .... I don't think it is the guest responsibility to tell the staff the type of service you expect. If the service is not up to par ... give them a poort 10-15% tip and leave a note that says you typically tip 20-25%, but not for that type of service and hope the next time you are in they do better.
I have left notes on the back of CC receipts to management and write on the front, see note on back. That way they server can not toss the note since they have to turn in the CC receipt and it will be seen when the manager cashes out the server at the end of the night.

a well tipped server will make sure that you get the best cut they have in the house, the best wine, etc. they will also tell you that the salmon is old, try the tuna instead. in many restaurants the server has complete control over the salads.
and btw, the maitre d can make a difference, tip him on the way in

I noticed - seems like they have crept up over the years. For value, true ambience, and just more overall a "lake experience" Harbor Docks has Sinclairs beaten hands down (at least west of Chimney Rock). Problem is (and a good one for Chris Zinn) that word will get around and the place will be so packed you can't gt in.

How is docking at Harbor Docks?
|
Decent....they have quite a few good slips. You can usually find one open without a problem.

Agree - I would guess about 12-15 spots. Low water might cuse some problems because they are at a fixed height. When we went Monday we had our choice of at least 4 or 5 spots - but they weren't very busy.
Another plus at HD is that if you sit outside your pooch can accompany you.
