Any thoughts on sea doo vs yamaha?? I'm leaning towards the Yamaha VX 110 deluxe. It's the first reasonably priced 4 stroke/ 3 seater. Starts around 7,600 bucks ( pre- tax). The 155 hp sea doo GTX starts in the 9,600 range. All the boating mags give the new Yamaha thumbs up for a family craft. Thoughts/ suggestions.... anyone? Besides the usually belly aching about PWC's, that is.

My only thought is that, to me, the smaller more sporty models are more fun to drive. The added maneuverability makes them more exciting. Its like the difference between riding a sleek chopper or crotch rocket vs. riding a honda goldwing. But if you are looking for a family ride with plenty of pulling hp, id go with the cheaper one. In the long run they are all gonna give you trouble. . .just the nature of the beast.

Rick,

I did all the research and bought Yamaha because of durability. I have had a Yamaha 140fx for two years with NO trouble. I am sure the new model would be just as good. The four stroke is clean and quiet (relatively). I love mine and its great fun with kids. Go yamaha...

I bought a Sea Doo GTS (three seater) in 92 and it is still running after 13 years and my kids and their friends put it through hell. It looks used but still runs good. I looked at the GTI Sea doo at Kowaliga saturday which is what took the place of the GTS for around $6600. not to bad. I am sticking with the Sea Doo.

Where is the best place to get these PWC's serviced?

Waverunners is basicallypersonal preference but before we bought the kids a yamaha pwc I spoke to a few pwc mechanics outside of the dealerships they all said yamaha was most reliable. Hey you can observe around the lake in the summer - more seadoos are being towed in broke down than yamaha.

The last PWC I pulled in was a Yamaha, but I do like Yamaha motors.

3 Seadoo's and 3 Yamaha's at various times. The Yamaha's win hands down in my opinion. I currenty have 2 Yamaha's and don't plan on ever owning a Seadoo again.

I had a variety f Yamaha...and did research before getting into them in 1992....so had a 1992, 1994, 1997 and a 2000. The older ones were the traditional Waverunners...loved them and no problems whatsoever...but I did do all the maintenance faithfully...the 2000 was the 800 series and fast...not as good a ride...but I never had a problem with it either...I would definitely recommend new over used especially for PWCs as you never know what trouble you might be buying otherwise..

Have to go to Montgomery to buy them but can get them service (I assume still can) at Blue Creek

Thanks for all the responses. I've spoken to a few mechanics myself, and most seem to favor Yamaha. I'm sure that if they are well taken care of , they are both fine pwc's. I am leaning towards the Yamaha VX110 because of the price and reliability factor. It's a full 2000 dollars cheaper than the GTX .

quiet, efficient, reliable and powerful. Not as strong as Seadoo if you want pure speed and way too much power, but for family fun and reliability, Kawasaki is best.

Have owned Yamahas, 1991, 1993, and 2002. My brother had a Seadoo and had electrical trouble. They may have certainly improved them in recent years, but I favor the Yamaha.

Since Bluecreek no longer sells Yamahas, let me recommend State Line Marine in West Point, Georgia. They sell and service. A little drive. Can drop it in West Point Lake and give a try out after service.

Nice couple owns and they have provided good and reasonably priced service for me.

One of the Seadoo's I had was an 2003.....major electrical problems! It spent more time in the shop than on the lake, and the company refused to admit it was a lemon.

Lots of good comments on this thread. We have had a three seater Seadoo GTS since 1996 (bought it new). No major problems. We bought the basic model without all the electrical gadgets. From what I have seen and heard, the fancy extra gadgets are what cause the major problems. These extras look cool and show others that you have spent more money; however, for reliability, keep it simple.

Yippeeeee I finally found something on here that I wanted to respond to! I have both a Sea Doo and a Yamaha. The Yamaha is a stand up jet skii, never had any problems with it; it's even been sunk not once, but twice. (OOPSIE) I had started calling the Sea Doo a Sea Don't because of the amount of time it has spent in the shop. Electrical problems was a major problem with mine as well. It's a '96, and it is running, but quite a few thousand dollars later. The Yamaha is a '95 and still going strong. I agree with the others in the forum that have gone with Yahama.

I have had both Sea Doo's (GTI's) and Yamaha Wave runners.
I just researched the Sea Doo GTX vs the Yamaha 110 and agree the Sea Doo costs more but have kept the Sea Doo's and got rid of the Yamaha. The Sea Doo's have been excellent no problems what so ever of course they are adult ridden.
For 2005 decided to buy the GTX because it eneded up only costing slightly more than the Yamaha because the dealer was willing to negotiate. Bought the GTX for $9600 including trailer and tax. The Yamaha dealers wanted the list price plus trailer plus delivery plus set up and tax so the difference was less than $1,000.
The GTX 4 stroke is in its 3rd or 4th year and has had very good reviews.

I have 2 1992 yamaha's.....still going strong...I have a '99 sea-doo gtx-rfi and it runs great...just have to replace the rectifier($120 if you do it yourself) every other summer.....sorriest rectifier anywhere.......other than that, I love the sea-doo......If I buy again, it will be Yamaha.

wow! Who gave you that deal on the Sea Doo?

The Seadoo I had considerable problems with was a GTX 4-Stroke. It was a nightmare! I finally convinced the dealer to trade it on a Yamaha.....BTW, the service manager admitted that many other GTX machines had similar problems. I hope you have better luck.

That is below cost on the sea doo, isn't it?

I don't think it is below cost but just like buying a car who knows "dealer's cost"?

I have a three seater 2000 Sea-Doo GTX I plan to sell. Not sure what it's worth. Bought a lake place that came with three Sea-doos and I don't need all three. The other two are twins. If your interested email me at wdmaddox@aol.com

Effie, we are looking for a reliable, used PWC or small power boat but, after reading the posts, not sure Sea Doo is the way to go.
