Subject:   Slippery docks steps - how to make non-skid?
Date:   11/17/2010 12:01:50 PM

Those pesky steps between the fixed dock and floating dock are too slippery to be used. What is best solution? I've seen some with nailed down roofing shingles. It works and is cheap but is rather cheap looking. Other ideas?

We use roofing shingles.  Just nailed them to the steps.  Works great.  Every once in a great while, I will sweep them ff with a broom.

Don't think you would walk on those shingles barefoot though..

Mix sand with the paint color of your choice. Paint, and voila, a gritty/grippy surface that is the color of your dock.

If mixing your own sand and paint doesn't sound appealing, you can get non-skid paint from Overtons.  It is expensive but it works and it has rubber particles in it as opposed to sand (more comfortable on the feet).

It usually lasts about 2-3 years before requiring a repaint and it keeps the missus happy with the "look".

Check with pool supply and industrial paint suppliers as well.

Don't mix the sand into the paint. Sprinkle it from a salt shaker over the wet paint. Better traction and the paint adheres to the step better.

make it routine to brush them with an acid cleaning brush on a 48 to 60 inch pole. Just keep knocking the algea slime off- thats all you have to do

At the Mobile Paint store in Montgomery on Adams Ave. they have a grit material that you sprinkle on paint to form a non-skid surface. They could recommend what paint you need for your application. A 2 part epoxy may work but will know best.

Lake Martin Dock has a sign out front (on Hwy 229) that is advertising "non-slip" stair treads for use underwater.  I am going to check them out soon to see what the deal is.

The best idea as posted here is to keep a long handled brush at the dock and just sweep the steps clean. The inherent problem with putting down a rough surface is that the additional surface area supports more algae growth faster. If you have to do it then do the Overton solution mentioned above since the rubber particles offer less surface area.

It works. Might look cheap, but it will prevent a trip to the AC Emergency Room, which is not cheap. When the shingles curl, after maybe 4 years, replace them for maybe $5.00.

I've seen some people buy the burlap looking door mats and put them on the steps. Comfortable, and should last a long time.

Outdoor carpet works well.  It will get slimy in a few weeks if you don't have regular traffic, but not nearly as slimy as bare wood.  The problem with shingles is that regular roofing nails can rust away causing the shingles to come loose leaving a rusty spike exposed for your feet.
