My husband and I will be visiting Lake Martin mid October and plan to look for a retirement home. We are looking for a place with deep water and quiet. Nothing against condo's, just don't want to be near the activity.
Any suggestions as to areas to look or avoid? We had rather buy a house but will build if we have to or will save money. Also need a recommendation for a real estate agent that is familiar with then entire lake. Thanks

For full time living, it’s hard to beat the several Russell developments; there are also a few smaller developers that have put in nice neighborhoods. I would avoid the east side of the lake because of the high density growth.

Deep water and quiet are rarely found in the same area of the lake.

got just the house you and your husband needs. it is a brand new home we built to retire in, but are going in a different direction. it is 7500 + sq. foot home with pier, floating dock, boat ramp, concrete seawall with steps. never been lived in. it will be on the mls in a few days. it is listed with Miller Dark, russell agent- hight recomend him, have bought several properties from him. house is in phase ll of the ridge in a quite cove. you can see big water from dock and is located in middle of martin- left to north, right to south. lake martin is a paradise, hope you come and have many great years with lots of great folks. good luck!!!

You've probably gotten 50 emails from realtors by now; I have no realtor recommendations, merely observations, Russell seems to rule on the Kowaliga side, and Fuller Realty seems to do a good job on the East side. Blue Creek has a lot of condo and small home development going on so I would recommend staying away from there, and the Chimney Rock/Ridge area, if you like quiet. Parker Creek (Kowaliga side) has been in the news a lot lately with new mini-developments so be cautious. Lots of speculation pricing on lots and houses, so don't be scared away by ridiculous pricing. Russell seems to lead the crowd with outlandish pricing -- seems they're trying to justify their developments.

Prices seem to be settling down a lot after a couple of years of inflation. Recommendation: Spend your first visit getting familiar with the different areas of the lake; decide where you want to be, then look at property.

SEE THE LAKE BY WATER FIRST, THEN DECIDE WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. Realtors have boats!!

I agree. See the areas by boat before you buy. It makes quite a difference. I've used Toni Adcock (ReMax) and have been very satisfied. She came highly recommended by several people I know.

One idea.... when debating what area of the lake etc.. we wanted to "call home" we rented a condo for 3 months. It took us one weekend to figure out condo life was not what we were after but...we used that summer to just get a "feel" for the lake and where we wanted and did not want to be. We're so glad we took that time to acquaint ourselves with the pros and cons of different areas before we made our investment. Good Luck! Lake Martin is a wonderful place. By the way, we settled on the "north end" of the lake in the Madwind area. We love it...great water, quiet, 10 minutes by car back to Alexander city for groceries, drug store etc... etc.. Everyone will tell you good and bad about different areas but it's kinda like going to Baskin Robbins you have to find out "what flavor works for you!"

Same here Sue, we rented a house every weekend during the Summer of 2003 and boated around the lake looking at property etc..

At one point thought we wanted to be at the Kowlaigia, Will Point, Windermere or Ridge, but then decided to far from town., but hte water sure is pretty on that end. We also ended up at the north end of the lake, 5 minutes to town, etc.

As the old saying goes to each their own, but am glad we spent the tiime on the lake prior to making our purchase, very much worth the intital investment especially if you are looking long term in terms of years on the lake in retirement.

I am going to see Jack Washburn later today (Friday). Would you like for me to pass along you name and number? Again, Jack is one of the best agents around (especially the lake)
Good Luck
