If it were to be electronic there are substances used in their manufacture that can be toxic.  Plain old toasters and coffee makers I wouldn't think will harm the landfill.  Not sure what Alex City or Dadeville have, but the biweekly visits by the Montgomery Sanitation Department to certain locations (mostly schools) separates metal items for recycling.

All municipal solid waste landfills are lined and have leachate and gas collection systems.  Totally fine to dispose of small appliances and even small amounts of chemical waste like paints, etc.  That is what they are designed to accept and those types of waste don't take up a lot of space.
