I am getting ready to purchase property on the lake. Have been lurking on the forum for over a year. I can't afford the million dollar homes and I don't want anything that big. I am a nature lover, enviornmental activist, enjoy fishing, trolling, and quiet. I can tolerate the loud boats and jet skis but don't want to be in the thick of those activities. I can be sociable but also enjoy solitude and do not care to share docks or piers as the condos do. Searching the real estate pages I found twenty some houses that might suit my needs. This will be a summer home for the next five years and then a retirement home. I am looking for sincere advice from folks who have lived on the lake. Places I have looked up have addresses of mostly Jackson's Gap and Dadeville. If you were looking for a retirement home in a clean area that you would love for the rest of your life and you wanted to stay under 350,000 where would you look? I would really rather get something for half of that and fix it up. Anyhow, I have read that there were water quality problems in part of the lake at one time. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks,
Hopefully a new neighbor

Well now....dont know you will find anything on the water for 175,000...maybe tho,,,Jacksons Gap and Dadeville are on the east side and offer a more laid back area if you are away from the resorts of Stillwaters and the Bama Park area....
Those are just mailing addresses and as such encompass alot of places...might be what you are looking for..

Regards..

We've been all over the lake and there are a number of great spots. The Dadeville (Sandy Creek) area is very nice, very clean water and nice sandy bottom. There seems to be a bit more lot footage to the property there as opposed to, say the south part of the lake. $$ wise, I don't think that you will find one part of the lake being less expensive that another. When we were looking last year, we did see quite a few "fixer uppers" in teh Jackson Gap area. Hope this helps some.

If you are planning to send $350,000. why not buy a lot and build. Lots are expensive, but you could build to your exact specifications.

Thank you all. Plan on spending tomorrow and the next several weekends looking. If you hear of anyone wanting to sell something you think I might like let me know. Thanks

I think you can accomplish just what you want. The Sandy Creek area is a great place to start. My best advice is to look , look and then look again.
Most Realtors are well meaning but won't tell you the things you really need to know. Some are torn between rules and relationships. Some just don't do their homework.

Now I don't know what you like but you are going to make compromises. In this price range you will get some neighbors that take care of their property and are concerned about being good neighbors and then some that are classic rednecks and have 8 cars on blocks in the front yard, 14 dogs running loose and don't have a clue about being a good neighbor! Unless you want to pay the big bucks to get in a subdivision with restrictions you just have to adjust.

Good Luck! You are going to love this lake!

Being a 40 year resident of the lake, I would generally recommend areas on the east side of the Tallapoosa River for the lifestyle you describe. However, I don't know of any place on the lake I don't enjoy...it's just the old adage that "some are nice to visit but I wouldn't want to live there."

Be patient and really look around...you can probably find exactly what you want.

We have been in the Real Island area for many years, and the water is almost always clear and clean with little on no debris. There are no big inflows of water bringing debris and mud like some places on the east side. There are usually several places available west of Real Island.
Check it out before you buy.
