Another example of excellence in government by the City of Atlanta.

I will quote the famous CAT - "this is some bad chit right here"

We have friends from England who visit every year.  A trip to the Varsity is a must.  It would be great if the  Muirs and the city can work something out...

Maybe ATL needs to ask the Varsity "what'll you'll have, what'll you'll have?"

I feel bad for those people who go to the Cheshire Brdg Rd for their grease fix..............but, good news is we can still go downtown ATl and/or up to the Town Center Mall area for a Varsity fix. I guess "staff" of the planning Dept will get an attaboy for cleaning up the traffic in the area where this store is closing down!!

I remember the day they opened. Lived at the time in an apartment complex off Chesire Bridge Rd near Lindbergh. Nipsy Russell, the comedian, worked at the Varsity downtown taking orders. I was amazed how you could have a carload of people ordering and they could remember the order without writing it down.

You got me. I do remember Leb's downtown, Pickwick that Lester Maddox owned, and Mammy's Shanty and the Plantation Lounge at Peachtree and West Peachtree. I also remember a restaurant at the corner of Cheshire and Lindbergh that had a red roof and a great buffet Friday nights. A nightclub opened up later that was a great place to party.

It was the Rajah, the original restaurant at that location. After little league games at Bagley Park I would make my parents take me there to have a Rajah Burger. It was a triple and had the same special sauce as a Big Mac. The Varsity loved the location and made an offer they couldn't refuse. I went to school with Doug "Duffy" Muir, the dad of the current owner that is in the video. The old man put him to work behind the counter at the downtown Varsity and he decided he would finish his accounting major instead :-) I didn't go to the Pickrick downtown but I did go to his one in Sandy Springs in the 70's. GREAT fried chicken while you listened to Lester play the piano. The Pickrick name came from "Pick" meant to discern the best food and "Rick" meant to rack it up on your plate. The Atlanta Constipation started the story that there were ax handles in the restaurant downtown but they were actually smaller "pick" handles autographed by Lester that were a memento of the PICKrick and had nothing to do with attacking protesting blacks. That was all a lie and intended to sell papers. Now you know the REST of the story.

When blacks tried to integrate his restaurant near Tech, he handed out autographed ax handles to his supporters outside. They are full sized handles 3 feet long and have imprinted Pickwick Drumstick Atlanta Ga. I think the little ones he sold as souvenirs.
