This was my first experience with a big disaster. The closest I have seen to it is a big B-52 strike in VN. I have been over there for 4 days and have to take my hat off to all the volunteers out enmass. The response has been very gratifying. There has been such a change in the Impy Road area. The power crew we had has come from North Carolina and has worked wonders. A local builder has been everywhere, putting up tarps, securing homes, clearing driveways. Red Cross disaster people giving information and even calling back with more and better information. The church's giving food and aid and shelter. Even the law enforcement people manning the road block have been the same ones every day. Tell me standing out there on hot asphalt checking ID's all day is fun. Although I was a little "agitated" the first day after sittin in traffic for over an hour I was turned around for lack of ID, I saw the need for the security and applaud them. What I have seen has been a horrible disaster that has very rapidly and quite proficiently, been handled. We have a long way to go but the good Lord willing, we are going to get through this.

I am a fairly new Alabamian, and I have to say how impressed I am with the way people have responded to this disaster. It feels like everyone in the state has taken it personally and is willing to help in any way that they can.

I agree, and we on Sims Rd. are very grateful for everyone who has been pitching in. We're sure to be back and forth from here in Mississippi quite a bit, and while we do have quite a mess to handle, the people involved have been so helpful.
