The students are making the point that having admission requirements based on race, religion, etc ... and not on qualification is as crazy as this.  Darn liberals ... when their bias is called out they scream foul.

Don't think you can just blame "liberals" It's an interesting way to make the point, don't you think? Very creative, and it's certainly bringing the issue to the forefront.

After reading more ... this has been common practice of student republicans at other schools to make the point on biased  admission standards.  It is just that Berkley is so far left it raised more media attention.

Frankly I am suprised there is a republican student group at Berkley ... I am sure they are not the most popular group on campus.

But it does amaze me how other students and the media feel this is so racist and they do not see the changes to the admission standards as no problem whosoever.   Where or when does it stop?   If they want equality, let everyone be measured the same and not based on the color of their skin or country of origin.

I have heard of these types of events to point out the inherent inequity in racial quotas and race-based decision making at colleges. No surprise that the bastions of free speech (the entire premise of tenure) would censor these events. The American university system, along with union leadership, the government media and the environmental movement are the last bastions of left wing lunacy and socialism.

I'm glad that there are still schools that are "bastions" of free speech. MM, you make it sound like you only think free speech is good when it involves conservative free speech. I think a students, both liberal and conservative, are upset by the quota system. Tough to think that you might not get to attend your school of choice, not because of your grades or ability to pay, but because they already had enough of your demographic. I think this is a very creative way to make the point, whether it is done by liberals or conservatives. And I'm glad the media has picked up on it. Quotas do not add up to equality.

It is like busing in the 60's ...

For God sake, just let everyone compete based on standards the school sets and the demographics will take care of themselves.  Either they want a certain standard or they don't.  If they do not get enough of certain ethnic groups, either they do not qualify or they do not want to go their.  Why lower their standards to have a forced diversity.  CRAZY.

Hound, there have been any number of very good studies and numerous books that have documented the control of the American university system by liberals. There have also been polls done that documented that university professors by a wide margin vote for Democrats. There have been numerous instances where conservative speakers have been rejected and their speeches disrupted by leftist students and very few examples of the opposite (actually none that I can think of). I could go on and on with examples but my point is made about the left-wing bias and dominance in the university system in this country. Of course there are exceptions and there are a number of colleges and universities that are not run by liberals, but they are the exception and not the rule. While there may be liberal students upset with quotas it is indisputably true that it is liberals that demand and promote quotas in schools, government and elsewhere. Conservatives simply believe in the content of character and not the color of skin, gender, sexual orientation. Liberals are fanatically obsessed with identity politics. It defines them, it motivates them, it informs there are thought and action. To wit, any opposition to Obama's failed policies is de facto racism.

And how did you survive the "liberal" university experience?

I was insulated from liberal nonsense by great parents who taught me to critically examine what you hear, evaluate it from the perspective of historical experience and not let emotion or a desire to be popular to drive my beliefs. I also went to a Catholic college before that became a misnomer. Went to mass each week and we were required to take religion/philosophy classes each year. When I had a leftist professor I would challenge them when they were off the reservation but I have to say it was not all that often. Probably also helped that I was in the sciences where you tend to interact with less ideological types.
