Oh dear, I think I'm m-e-l-t-i-n-g......(and not from the sunny day today)

In other news, I saw that Gen Meyers, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs has a new book out. Should be an interesting read. He was on "Morning Joe" this morning. He spoke extensively about the disconnect between how Washington Policy makers saw Iraq, and how the soldiers on the ground saw Iraq. Considering he played in both fields, it should be interesting to hear what he has to say.

Former military guy, did my Pentagon deal on the path upward.. Did you work with DOD in your after life, just curious?? Got some insight on that stuff.. Congressional staffers, et al.

Well, I worked for DoD for 32 years. Spent 18 of those in the DC area. I retired in 2006.
It's always interesting to hear the perspective of the Chairman and the Regional Commanders. Generally don't hear from them outside the Pentagon until they retire. But they live with a foot in DC and a foot in the field.

Other than Westley Clark, give me one name of a military CINC that still has a foot in DC.. Most came away from the Washington experience with a clorox footbath and glad they had not caught the fungus.. Been there, did that, as a field grade officer, proposing military budgets to Senate committee staffers.. Young, uninformed number crunchers with zero military experience..
Their agenda driven arrogrance will not be soon forgotten, even three decades later. New whiz kids with ZBB, from the the Carter Administration. Survived the abuse and humility, a solid follow on military career and retired with dignity.. I'm lucky.. and crappie fishing is currently great on Lake Martin.

CINCs (old term) that are still serving, not those that retire. You are right, most of them get as far away from Washington as possible. It leaves a bad taste.

You are right about those Senate Staffers. I was once in a meeting with some and realized I was the oldest person in the room (I think I was 40 at the time). They are arrogant and don't have a clue. What I call "what would happen if we build an igloo in the desert?" crowd. The permanent staffers aren't much better. One of the most arrogant finally quit to go be a lobbyist, and was replaced by another one that was more arrogant.
I think most military people distrust the Hill staffers for good reason.

You are right, fishing is much better.
