Subject:   Need advice on Access Point vs Repeater vs Bridge
Date:   11/17/2013 11:01:08 AM

I need to shoot wireless from the cable modem (connection) 237ft to a pool house. I have several Linksys routers laying around. I have installed DD-WRT in one already. I was going to make it a bridge and put it next to the existing router. so, It would go CABLE MODEM - ROUTER - BRIDGE. Then shoot across to pool house and hit a ACCESS POINT (or Repeater?).

Computers would be on the house side (BRIDGE) and also computers and DVR for camera system on pool side (ACCESS POINT or REPEATER).
I plan to be able to access my camera system from my cell from anywhere to view cameras.

I am confused on what I should configure these routers as... Bridge on the house side and Access point or repeater on pool side.

If anyone has time and doesn't mind emailing me some info I sure would appreciate it. I was making progress but, got stumped and I have been all over the net and back searching for info.

    Thanks

Question, do you have line of site?

If so, a repeater is the way to go.

Any chance of a buried in conduit cable? That would work as well.
Keep in mind, use a ups battery side for your power needs as our bumps in our elec service will cause you to do resets, not a preferred activity.

Wish I could come help.  Glad to help via phone or email.

Don

Ok, I converted the Linksys Router to DD-WRT then configured it into a repeater. Its grabbing the Net/Signal and bringing it to pool house. Now I need to be able to connect Camera System DVR to repeater and broadcast it over the Internet so I can see cameras via cell phone Internet.

This may be the hard part.

  Thoughts?

1-Modem Plugged into Linksys router (192.168.1.1) <<< This is where I get the Internet from

2-Repeater is Linksys w/ DD-WRT (192.168.79.1) <<< Via wifi I get in from the above to here

3-DVR is plugged into Linksys w/ DD-WRT and the DVR has 192.168.1.108 as a IPaddress.

Cant view cameras. This is where I get confused as what to do. It may be that I have to go to The #1 Router and someway go through #2 and then to DVR. Just not sure yet.

Everybody needs to be in the same IP range to talk to eachother. Is ok, you can get WiFi signal after repeater, but it will do that while not in the ip range yet no way to communicate to main system on another ip range.

See the manual regarding the repeater and change it's ip to the 192.168.1.xxx range, to something like 192.168.1.125

Then what comes after it can talk back to everybody. As it now stands the .79.1 cannot talk to the .1.108.

From your post:
2-Repeater is Linksys w/ DD-WRT (192.168.79.1) <<< Via wifi I get in from the above to here

3-DVR is plugged into Linksys w/ DD-WRT and the DVR has 192.168.1.108 as a IPaddress.

Similar situation in distance, but I can run a conduit.  Best to run ethernet or another type of cable.  Will I lose any internet speed with ethernet or coaxial?

Finally... Its all working perfect. Eating up bandwidth steaming the cameras over the internet. probably will research that next.

   Thanks
