Another group of layoffs...finding more and more folks who are in that category...not enuf business in the area to re-hire...and especially not at the salary level they were at...
6 months severance is not really much if you are in the position....
Also makes a big dent in the local economy as it gluts an already stressed job market...we are losing our mid affluent folks...or you may find them working two jobs at the mini mart

Not good. I noticed though that Russell's earnings were up the last quarter. That's probably good in the long run. Most companies would and I think have left long ago. They did the logical thing, shipped off the lo-tech functions to be competitive and kept the higher skilled - higher value functions in AL

The area really needs some higher tech stuff. I think the auto economy will eventually help. The lake economy is still starved for infrastructure. Always seems that the commercial and shopping needs a critical mass of population first. Growth that is dependent on 2nd homes will be slower than primary residences.

I worked there 26 years and this is not the last. Just wait until they build the knitting and bleachery in Mexico/Honduras (2005) then they can shut down all manufacturing in Alex. City, I hope I`m wrong but I don`t think so. But they did give me a Who moved my Cheese book. I was not to impressed with Jack the times I met him. Bottom line was all he talked about. He was brought in to keep the stock price up, but it never has since he has been there...
But there is life after Russell, good luck to all who has lost their jobs, something good or better is out there just don`t give up.

I know this is a Republican, Bush-loving bunch, but we are losing GOOD jobs at an alarming rate in this country and the Bush adminstration could not care less. Two of my children work in the Information Technology (IT) industry which has lost over half their total jobs in recent years, and these are often six figure jobs. Replacing that with a fast food job is not a one-for-one trade, but the statistics typically just count jobs gained and lost. Even with that math, we still have lost over two million jobs in the past two years. We need to re-think our trade policies and many other decisions before we find ourselves in an irreversible slide to third-world status.

What are your suggestions???
I agree on the poor prospects, but it sure does seem that all we hear about politically is jobs...and not alot has shown in improvement in the past 20 years..even thru the 90's..it sure wasnt big jobs where folks were making mnoney...but the stock market....and maybe now the big companies have gotten tired of tax bases et al...but on the other hand why have Nissan, Hyundia etc come herer for plants...I 'm sure its a tradeoff for the transportation cost...but...give it a real thot too..those have created alot of jobs that arent fast food types..

Excellent point. It is not just as simple as on the count of three all jobs overseas. You don't want to ship weight or air but everything else depends on the numbers.

It's not just manufacturing jobs either, call centers, computer programming etc. are all at risk. It will eventually settle out for the good of all. It's just the transition that is so painful and upsetting.

A wise person was asked what the Government should have done to prevent the great depression. The answer was "Nothing, earlier". Same goes here.
