Anyone know what the GOP candidates would do to control nukes in Iran? Last night " Romney said he felt stopping Iran’s nuclear program was far more important than high gas prices that come out of Middle East tension. Romney, Gingrich and Rick Santorum all took hawkish stances on Iran and faulted President Barack Obama for his handling of the situation and his foreign policy." They talk tough and are critical of Obama, but what would they actually do other than talk tough? Any of their supporters have a clue? Think Positive OBAMA 2012

I have no idea what they would do, other than talk tough. But, I suspect there is a lot going on behind the scenes (other than trying to keep Israel on a leash). Things are rarely what they seem on the surface. I feel confident that we are in some kind of discussion with Iran at some level. That is the sort of thing that would not be broadcast in the media, and may involve unlikely 3rd parties (China? India?). I always find it amusing that during the primaries and during the Presidential campaign when a candidate says that they would do this or that, especially in the area of foreign affairs. Once in office, they almost always come down to Earth with a thud, when they realize how complicated it is to get things done internationally. Even when the US is willing to go it alone, delicate relationships take a lot of finesse. There is a reason that the Department of State ranks slightly above the Department of Defense in the Cabinet.

Ron Paul dismissed the problem when he said "why can't we just live with a nuclear Iran?".    Perhaps we can, but the Israeli's won't.

Rick Santorum stated in one of the debates that he would simply bomb Iran... and I recall thinking how completely inappropriate & dangerous his position was.   Iran's position is a truly paranoid,  they believe they will not be safe unless they have the bomb.  Hearing a serious US Presidential candidate make this threat surely does not help calmer, moderate forces in Iran produce a compromise with the IAEA..       I don't think I'd let Santorum off the hook and call this a simple benign campaign soundbite either...  He announced his intention to go to war if he is elected.   GOP candidates should weigh their rhetoric much more carefully.

I agree there is (I hope) much going on out-of-the-public view.   But the Foreign Relations strategy of these GOP candidates is a mile wide and an inch deep...

1 – Hound is right!  I have enough experience to know that I haven’t a clue outside my compartment.  As W said, “…and some actions you will never know about.” (9/11 speech)

2 – If the Israelis do it… they will not take credit for even knowing about it.  This is a lesson WE need to learn.
