Kevin Hassett is senior fellow at the think tank American Enterprise Institute where he directs economic policy studies. He regularly appears on Bloomberg Television. He advised President Bush in his campaign, and he currently serves as a senior economic adviser to the John McCain 2008 presidential campaign.

shocker - he blames the Democrats... LOL

On September 15, even McCain blamed the Republicans.

While campaigning in Orlando, McCain told the crowd: “I think, still, the fundamentals of our economy are strong but these are very, very difficult times and I promise you we will never put America in this position again.”

McCain pledged to “never put America in this position again.” Did he intend to admit to being part of the problem, saying “we will never” do this to you good people “again”? He often seems to speak without thinking, but as my mother always says: “People say what they mean.” John McCain said what he meant: he is part of the problem.

Record unemployment, catastrophe in the financial markets, unprecedented numbers losing their homes—laying the blame at the feet of his compatriots, the Republicans, McCain was talking straight for the first time in a long time.

He also offered up this nugget in Orlando: “This economic crisis is not the fault of the American people.” Again McCain tells us what he thinks. Through no fault of our own, Americans are being put through punishing economic times thanks to the ineptitude of the current Republican regime.

ouch

I prefer to believe "WE" was referring to American leadership in general. It has been bad for a long time.

C'mon, tell me you don't buy into the media template about the economy?

You said, "Record unemployment, catastrophe in the financial markets, unprecedented numbers losing their homes—laying the blame at the feet of his compatriots, the Republicans, McCain was talking straight for the first time in a long time."

Let me dissect this for you so you can be a little more realistic.

Record unemployment: Not even close to the truth and you have to know it is true. Our current employment numbers are better than when Jimmy Carter was President and better than the last two recessions. Are there weaknesses in the job market? Sure. Is it record unemployment, not even close.

Catastrophe in the financial markets: This is probable the biggest area of concern but you delude yourself if you think when McCain said "we" he was talking about Republicans. There is plenty of blame to go around but to quote Bill Clinton, "We and Republicans in Congress tried to fix Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but Democrats blocked our efforts'. So forget the blame Republicans.

Unprecedented numbers losing their homes: A couple of facts. First, do you realize the percentage of homes in foreclosure? At the end of April It was 0.19%!! That means that 99.81% of all homes were NOT in foreclosure. Are the foreclosure numbers higher in absolute terms? Of course, but that is because there are record numbers of Americans that own homes. In 1960 62% of Americans owned their own homes and in 2005 almost 69% of Americans did. There were 180 million in the US in 1960 which translates to about 112 million owning their own homes. In 2005 there were close to 290 million Americans translating to about 197 million owning their own homes. That means 85 million more Americans owned their own homes in 2005 versus 45 years before. Its even more dramatic when you look further back.

My point is not that we don't have a problem with foreclosures, its just throw away lines like "record numbers" are meaningless when you look at it in relative terms. Do I wish unemployment numbers were lower? Of course. But lines like "record unemployment" are silly when you look at the facts. I am of the opinion that the underlying economy is more sound than Obama supporters and the media want the uneducated, economically illiterate masses to understand. That is McCain's point and it is correct and true and unassailable by any objective measure.

Hey wannabe a cry baby, before you go off spewing this vomit of a speech next time try to read the article a little closer so you see the facts.

Republican Regime, gimmie a break, the democrats controlled congress for the last two years so just tell me about all the good they have done. Like taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Freddie and Fannie and sitting back and saying ohhh how could this happen, it has got to be those evil republicans holding us all back. Go stick your head in the sand at sand island and pull your pants down you'll look a lot smarter.

um, yeah, I didn't blame the Republicans - McCain did - get mad at him - he threw his own party under the bus.

I have never said it was one party's fault over the other - blame can easily be found on both sides of the aisle. but again, McCain spoke the words, I just copied and pasted them.

For someone who likes to trumpet the error of others using the internet let me point out that this alleged quote of McCain's could only be found in one place (a leftist blog site) and here is the author:

Dr. Bean is an Associate Professor of English at Marshall University, specializing in Gender Studies, Film and Drama. She is the author of "Post-Backlash Feminism: Women and the Media Since Reagan/Bush" (McFarland & Co. 2007). She is Women and Media editor for OpEdNews.com and hosts her own blog on mid-life and feminism at kelliebean.webs.com.

There's a reliable source of information for you?!?!?! Let's see, Marshall is in West Virginia and I am sure she just happened to be in Orlando during the school year when she is busy spewing her feminist hatred for men, Christians, conservatives and Republicans. C'mon, please don't insult our intelligence by taking a completely unreliable source providing information not corroborated by any other news source (and if it were true I can assure you it would be on the front page) and presenting it as a fact.

MartiniMan, you are correct! I apologize and should have done some more research. I too, in looking a second, third and fourth time could only find that one source.

I do try and find the most moderate site I can - this time I did a pretty cr*ppy job of doing that.

I stand corrected and thanks for pointing that out. Kind of bad on my part pointing out the one sideness of the article that started this and mine was not any better.

No sweat. We are in the heated last few weeks and I too am susceptible to wanting to believe what I read when I like it. :-)

Did you watch the debates? Just curious what you thought. I suspect that if you are an Obama supporter/McCain detractor you think Obama and won and vice versa. My sense is that if McCain needed a knockout punch to get back in the polls it didn't happen. I also sense that for those that were leaning to McCain on foreign policy concerns it probably edged them closer, especially since Obama seemed to cater to his base which may move some independents away from him.

I still believe there is a better than even chance that Obama will win.

In all honesty - I am not a real fan of any of them. My biggest fear, however, is for Obama to win and it be a democratic house, senate and presidency.

I have talked about it with my Mom (democrat) and she poinst out the Clinton had a democratic house and I think senate his first go round and the far left blocked him because he was seen as too moderate.

My husband is a republican - his big fear is taxes as is mine.

McCain worries me because of his age more than anything because I just cannot picture Palin as the President. I am just not seeing the qualifications for her (really don't want to debate this point, it is my opinion and nothing is going to change it as I think it is telling that Biden made the rounds after the debate and it does not appear that Palin did). But I don't think the tread above about her and witch hunting is fair - I saw the video (the whole 8 minute one) - nothing in it really bothered me.

I did not watch the debates as I would rather read and take it in rather than be caught up in the emotion of the moment.

I will probably end up voting for McCain, as I feel, in the long run he might be the lesser of two evils.

I just have an issue with falsehoods being put on here about any candidate and that being spouted as gospel.
