the dock that came with the house is a foot and a half above full pool. A good summer level seems to be 6" to a foot below full pool. So if I'm redoing the dock what should it be build to?? Rigth now it is two feet down to the water. What works best for you guys/gals?

I have the same problem. The previous owner built the dock level with the seawall rather than having two steps down at the sea wall. I will eventually lower the dock. My first lake property seemed just right to me. The joists were over half submerged on those rare full pool days. Even at 489.5 weekend waves made a nice splash through the board gaps. I think ideal would be for true full pool to be at the top of the joists, but reality is you'll have to vary that somewhat so that the height of any steps from land to dock are not awkward.

i just finished one and set the bottom of the joists 1/8th inch above 490. you can call 1-800 lakes 11 and they will give you current elevations for that exact moment. as we were building, we checked it several times over a 2 day period because the water was coming up fast at that time. each time, it checked out exactly correct with our 490 calculated benchmark. it sure helps to have a surveyor dad.

If you already have the boat you intend on using, I suggest getting the boat in the water and measuring how far off the water you would prefer for the dock to "rub". if your boat sits high in the water you may want your dock a little higher etc...

My deck surface is about 4 inches over full pool. I think that is ideal except on the one day a year the lake actually hits full pool. In the past that has been Memorial Day weekend and the boat waves rifle through the openings in the planks. Not toot big of deal and I like being closer to the water instead of a foot or two gap.

One thing to consider is that the beams can prevent the flow of water around and under the deck at higher lake levels. Pollen and debris tend to gather in the spot where my dock connects to the seawall when the lake levels are 389.6 or higher since the beams are actually in the water and the surface water can't pass under.

I would go just above full pool

Replaced and old dock couple of years ago. I have 2 X 8 dock joist with 2 X 6 decking. I set the bottom of my joist one inch above fool pool. So at fool pool, the top of the dock is 10 inches above the water. This works very well. We are rarely at 490 for long, and until we drop say about 2 feet or so, I can enter and exit the boats fine. Have a floater for lower water levels.

Fortunately, some time ago, I had placed a screw in an old dock post at exactly 490. Kept the post for reference. Then pulled strings from the screw to the the outer, middle, and inner post of the new dock so that I was sure the dock joists throughtout its length were one inch above full pool. Darn, it worked fine.
