Subject:   Eagle's nest by Acapulco Rock

We went looking for the eagle's nest near Acapulco Rock a few days ago and were unable to locate it. Is it gone or are we simply looking in the wrong spot? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

The Eagles nest is not on either Acapulco or Chimney island. It is on the last island toward the dam after them. If you approach from the North along the shoreline it is easy to view. It is not as close to the water as the one that was there previously.

Nest appears to be in a dead tree high on the island. I usually see an eagle sitting on a pine tree branch just south of the nest.

The dead tree that the nest you are refering to was in fell last summer. Not sure when it fell just remember going by and seeing it on the ground.

Well now I'm confused. The tree LOOKS dead to me and I have seen a young eagle near it every weekend except for yesterday. I will pay more attention this weekend. We are referring to the island on the dam side of the Rock, aren't we...directly before the right turn in the lake?

Yes, I was refering to the big nest that used to be in the tree on the island before you get to Chimney Rock. That tree fell last year so I guess that is when the eagles moved to where you have seen them.
I didn't know where they had moved to. I look forward to this weekend so we can ride over to where you are talking about and look for them.

I think I have confused myself as well. Are y'all saying the nest is on the same island as before just higher up. I come from the Kowliga area so it is the first island on my left when we turn left going towards the rock.

Yes, that is the island I'm referring to. When traveling south from Chimney, I pull up close to the shore on my right and about mid-way on the island is what I think is a nest, up high, in what I think is a dead tree. If you go too far, the greenery from the other trees will cover it so you only have a small window in which to see it. Each weekend I have seen a small eagle with a white head sitting on a pine branch south of the nest. Is this nest active...I don't know for sure but others on my boat have said they have seen a bird in the nest. This nest was there last year also. I'm not familiar with the fallen nest.

We built the house with blue roof directly across from center of this island and lived there for 8 years, moving just recently. We had a front row seat to the activity in the eagle's nest. The previous eagle's nest was definitely active as we saw two adult eagles and two eaglets in spring/summer of 2004 and 2005 and then I think it was in 2006 that the nest relocated to near the top of a dead tree about center of the island and just slightly east of the old nest. We saw at least one adult eagle there in 2007 and in 2008. This location is a bit harder to see but with binoculars, you can sit in a boat anywhere out from the island and find the nest. Best to watch in morning and at twilight as they will usually fly around and head back to the nest before dark. It is an awesome sight. We actually watched baby eaglets learning to fly a few years ago. They would flap up a few feet above the nest and then go back in the nest.
