One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut.

After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I
cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this
week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a
'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his
bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you,
I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the
shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank
you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay
His bill, the barber again replied, 'I can not accept money from you.
I'm doing community service this week.' The Congressman was very happy
And left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a
Dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between
the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

Hound; It would be good for you to make a list of all the freebies or heavily subsidized benefits our elected officials in D.C. get. If I did it Archie would post some fact-free rebuttal. I think the average person has no idea and would be appalled. I know you know them as an insider and it would be good to see them if you have the time.

I'll try to look them up. It is amazing how much they get in addition to their salary.

Perks:

A base lawmakers' salary is now $165,200 (a little higher for House and Senate leaders).

There is a cheap but excellent federal health care plan and life insurance. Plus free outpatient care from military hospitals. There is an inflation-adjusted pension plan.

a special thrift-savings accounts, a kind of 401(k) plan, that comes a one-to-one match up to 5% of a member's salary.

On top of that, they're given a sizable budget of $2 million to $4 million a year for office administration and staff expenses.

There is a furniture expense account.

Subsidized mass mailings to constituents (known as the franking privilege) and free income tax-return preparation assistance.

Members also receive a special tax deduction for maintaining a second residence.

There are the numerous foreign trips (spouses included) often to exotic places hosted by nonprofit groups. House members, but not senators, can also keep frequent flier miles they rack up on official travel and use them for personal trips later.

Members have exclusive use of the Congressional Research Service to do their legwork.

There is free use of broadcast taping studios.

Free reserved parking at the office and at Washington-area airports.

Free member-only gym and pool, expedited passport services and of course the well-appointed and subsidized members' dining rooms.

(I extracted this from a Kiplingers Website).

How can someone with a 165k salary become worth millions? All of the old timers up there are worth many millions. How? I know folks that make that kind of money and aren't multi-millionaires. And even with the tax breaks and allowances for car and second home the numbers don't add up. And the financial statements they fill out are a joke and a slap in the face to every American. They NEVER disclose the true value of any account or property or stock protfolio or whatever. They have ranges with statements like between 1 and 5 million, for that one and between 4 to 8 million, etc etc.

And BTW, it was a rhetorical question. I know how they do it.

I think I read that if they serve only one term they are fully vested in their pension plan. Also they are not in Social Security either,,,guess they know it won't be there when they retire.
