Wow, let's try again. The Department of Transportation has issued a new regulation for airlines that they must return to the terminal after a plane sits on the tarmac for 3 hours. The fine is $27,500 per passenger. Having sat one time for 5 hours, I find this a refreshing regulation. Knowing the Right and Libertarians are oppossed to more regulation, I am wodering if you feel the Obama socialists should stay out of it and allow airlines to decide when to return to the terminal? Afterall, if an airline keeps you on the tarmac for 6,,,,7,,,8 hours you can always fly another airline next tine.

That is not regulation. But the problem is not always the airline. I have sat for long times and once was a blown tire on landing and the plane needed to be towed or the tire changed. Few other times was weather back-up, traffic or gates not available due to other problems. It is never comfortable, but it does not happen that often and I used to fly a lot. Was platinum medallion for 5 years in a row. I am glad I am not any longer.

The airlines want to turn planes so I am not sure what the fines accomplish other than create another "tax" on business. And on an industry that is already hurting ... so yes, it is another bad idea and just a way to generate more government revenue rather than really solving the problem.

The solution is simple ... depending on the size of the airport, reserve 2 gates for emergencies only. They would be used in these rare situations to unload passengers and then the plane needs to back away and sit until the airline gate is available. All airlines contibute to the cost of the emergency gates based on the percent of other gates they own at the airport.

You don't need government fines when the situation, when it happens, is not out of choice or controllable.

-Reference above comments;
-First, not even my most conservative of friends thinks there should be NO government regulations. The government's job is to ensure a lawful playing field. What most people want is a government that provides the least amount of regulations as necessary, the laft just has an odd idea of the necessary.
-Second, I use to fly alot, but not as much as WW. I have never had to wait 4 or 5 hours in a plane. I think 3 hours is too long to wait in a plane on the tarmac. I'd say 1&1/2 hours should be max.
-Third, $27,500 sounds about right for a too-long wait, .....but, the $27,500 should go to each passenger, not the government!

Got way too many days in airports, also. My pet peeve has always been when the pilot closes the door, backs the plane a few feet away and then sits there for an hour or two. Always heard that pilot's hours started once the plane's doors were closed and pushed away. They always said that it kept their spot in line for takeoff. Not sure of the truth, maybe some of the pilots on the forum can clear it up. I'm not sure I could sit on a plane on the ground for 8 -10 hours without pinching someone's head off.

If the airplane loads up and pushes back within x minutes of scheduled "departure" it is considered an on-time takeoff. Doesn't matter that the passengers then spend interminable minutes/hours stuck in the aluminum tube on the ground waiting to take off....no ability to get snacks or drinks, no going potty...just strapped in.

In my experience JFK is the worst, but haven't flown from O'Hare. Atlanta is tolerable, although recent experiences are tempered by the overall slowdown in air traffic, and thus fewer aircraft competing for takeoff slots.

Well this wild eyed right winger think GF is on to something.. It's terrific legislation that gives DOT authority to penalize the airline industry, $27,500/per passenger for delayed takeoffs. Once more, the federal government arrives on it's white charger, in this instance to save weary jetsetters the inconvienience of setting in a jet for a few hours. I'm not sure $27,500 is enuff, I'm thinking more like $275,00 per pax.. that will teach those evil airlines.. And I'm starting to dig this fundamental change President Obama promised. Pretty soon, we will not have to work, have free cable, new cash for clunker cars, no mortgages, and food delivered to our front door.. Oops, almost forgot free health care. I'm sure I'm missing something, but hey, let's give this administration a chance, been less than a year.. But, at this point, "life is good."

Someone recommended paying the passenger instead of o-BAMA. I like that idea. What the hell has o-BAMA done to earn $27,500/passenger for a long delay? Pay the poor dude on the plane, say $100/hr. Then the complaints will cease and all will be happy.

a) This is not enough reason for even ONE more regulation from the government.
b)Yes give the fines or penalties DIRECTLY to the passengers.
c) Why not send a "comfort and sustenance” truck out to the aircraft if a gate is not available? A potty pumper? Why not open a hangar if no gate is available?

NO! No more government regulations!

My question is why can't the airlines do this on their own? Big business should respond without government regulation. But, they don't and this new regulation is the result. I assume from the remarks that the crew is paid to sit on the tarmac so why should they care?
