I have followed Tennessee Football since 1959. I'm fed up with the program at UT.  It appears to be a clone of our Federal Government. It appears that this program and many others recruit mainly criminals and use three criteria

  • Runs fast, Hits hard, and wants to go to the NFL or NBA after the second year.

Should coaches also not consider if the "stud":

  • was arrested at 16 for drugs
  • has a history of fights in HS
  • has 2 children and is not married
  • comes from a single parent family
  • welfare supported since birth
  • rejects rules and authority

How many of these athletes can read and write? What about a criteria for being a good citizen?

Oh well! We would not have college football in 2010. We need more "Bear" Bryants who would bench a Joe Namath in a bowl game.

-How bad are major college sports? In my view pretty bad. -Whom to blame? What to blame? -Well, we could blame the kids. We could blame the coaches. We could blame teh administrations. -Me? I blame the fans! If fans are stupid enough to support these programs, then they deserve what they get. It's like I told a Bama fan teh other day; I don't get it. Most of the Bama fans never went to the university of Alabama! Most of teh players aren't from teh state of Alabama; a lot are thugs from back east! The coach you now idolize, only a few years ago you hated. - He looked at me and said, "You don't get it!" -If fans refused to pay ticket prices, all this would cease. Where's the problem? Where's the solution? The fans!!!

Too bad we couldn't get Florida or South Carolinas to recruit our wonderful Michael Vick.  I agree, with the original post.

I hear this more and more, "most Bama fans didn't even go to school there". What's wrong with that?

It’s a convenient comment.  They say the same thing in Tennessee (hmmm… we even said that when we lived there).  The same line is spouted in Florida, Ohio, Louisiana, etc… you get my drift.  Folks don’t say that in Virginia, because UVA is too difficult to get into (academic standards) and the other Virginia schools don’t have names that identify with the state (uh… “Commonwealth”).

Fans are fans and every school has its detractors based solely on football or basketball.

That said, don’t we lament the inattention given to academics and citizenship?  Follow the money.  The alumni demand a winning team as a condition of contributions.  The athletic departments are towing the line and trying to supply winning teams.  Sports proficiency, aggressiveness, and completive attitude on the field take precedent over scholarship and citizenship, because those displays (the former) bring in the money from the alumni, apparel franchises, and the networks.

“Children, follow the money.”

It would be nice if every college rememebered that first and foremost, they are ACADEMIC institutions. They'd be better off it they ensured every player actually got a college degree and met the academic standards. The Southern and Midwestern obsession with football and other sports mystifies me. Sadly, I think the Major is right. Follow the money.

Long ago college sports transitioned from amateur status to being a big business.  Why are big college coaches paid millions of dollars a year to win?  How is that a young man from a disadvantaged background who is good at basketball or football drive around in an Escalade and wearing multiple gold chains?  When I was in school I drove a 10-year old van that barely ran and the only gold I was aware of was golden oldies.  Of course, I may have been short....but I was slow....

I think the cow has left the barn regarding college sports and winning is the name of the game.  If the coach can win with criminals, reprobates, drunks and druggies, he will be celebrated by the media and the fans.  Alumni will accept nothing less, at least most of them.  I have reached the point where I don't worry too much about it and actually am pleased when the odd kid comes from a difficult background, goes to college, works with a coach that teaches him or her some values and leaves a better person....maybe even one with a college degree.
