Looking forward to trying the Yellow Hammer on our next trip down. Few weeks ago we did try in Alex City a new Mexican food place called Carlos. It is approx. a block in from Cecils. We also tried another Mexican place called El (or maybe it is IL) Portal. It is on I believe Cherokee Road next to the Buick/Pontiac Dealership. We had lunch in both places, and the food was excelent. Carlos has a slightly nicer decor, but El Portal may of been a buck or two cheaper. I would go back to either. Carlos appear better set-up for a larger group. Then there is JimBobs which is over close to the Movie Theater. Most know it is a chicken place and specializes in chicken fingers. I actually thought their chicken wings were better than their excellent Fingers. All of the above places where inexpensive and casual. We also tried the Blackened Catfish at Cecils (supposedly one of the top 100 dishes in the State of Alabama). In my personal opinion it was barely edible. Way to salty. I have had other dishes there that have been OK but not exceptional in my opinion. The atmosphere and decor in Cecils is rather nice.

Would like to hear of favorite catfish and Barbque places. Cottons was OK . Lets all add to the list for everyone's benefit.

Catfish - Red's
Chicken - Jim Bob's (My favorite restaraunt by far)
Burgers - Niffers
Barbeque - Sho Nuff
Mexican - El Rancho Grande (no alcohol there anymore)
Chinese - Green Garden
Steak - ?????? - I've heard Poplar Dawg's is good, but I've never been

One thing we don't really have available in the Lake Martin area is good Italian food. I think both the Cove and Cecil's have some Italian dishes, but they are nowhere near as good as true Italian places like Provino's or Johnny Carino's.

Yes they are excellent. But you can only get em on Fri and Sat nights. No frills and no atmosphere but great grilled items on the weekend nights
Choice of
steaks (the fillet is wonderful)
lobster tail
pork chop (very good too)
kids can get deli items off regular menu (sandwiches, pizza etc..)

I cant believe noone has mentioned Oskars. IMO, that is the best restauraunt on the lake. I have never had a bad meal there and you will always get plenty to eat.

It's out in the middle of nowhere. Suprisingly, they have a pretty good website. Check it out. They have a map.

If you go, be sure to try the onion rings and hushpuppies. And be forewarned, the last time I went they did not take credit cards. I had to pay with a check.

For Mexican the ONLY choice is Carlos'. Best food, best service, best atmosphere. They run the best resteraunt in AC. On the lake it is deffinately Oskars.

Best fish on the around the lake is Piney Woods on hwy#63 about a mile from Kowliga bridge. They just don't serve beer. Got the best hushpuppies anywhere. They serve you a basket of hushpuppies and fries for appertisers. Also the Talapia is good.

I heard that place has or had a problem with its generator. I also heard the Owner handles a rolling pin like a South American does a machette.

The closest good Italian food restaurant I am familiar with is on US 231 in Wetumpka . The food is absolutely great. It is worth the short drive. The name is Casa Napoli. It is on the Right side of 231 well South of WalMart in Wetumpka. Kind of hard to spot but it is on the HWY.

I do believe they serve adult beverages and you do not need a reservation. Dress is casual, but it is a nice place.

Have tried Cottons for BBQ but was unimpressed. OK, but nothing to rave about. There is an ole Bham boy (his name is Nelson Head) up here in Northern Virginia that runs a place called Dixie Bones. His BBQ is far and away superior to Cottons. I will have to try Sho Nuff. Where is it located? Dadeville?

It's in Alex City. It's in the Alex City Shopping Center, where Roses used to be. Across the street from Radney Funeral Home. It's up in the corner of the shopping center, so it might be hard to see from the road.

IF you have never had the Cheese balls you need to get them the next time you go. They look like a Big Hushpuppie but filled with cheese. They are AWESOME with some ranch dressing.

Y'all need to hush about Oskars. The line is too long already. Last time I waited 45 minutes, but those catfish fingers and okra were worth it.

Like to mention EL Portal again in Alex City. Food is as good as Carlos but not as upscale a facitlity. I just remembered it is in the same building BooRays used to be in. I certainly miss BooRays.

You could pull a Mexican day by having lunch at El Portal and dinner at Carlos.

I have also had several good meals at the Cove and Dock Side. There was a time when Sinclairs was very good but last couple of times I was there. Hope it has made a comeback with food quaility since the place has a lot going for it.

Yeah! ODB is right. If you haven't tried Oskars don't bother...it's not worth your time. You really wouldn't like those catfish fillets and okra. Just leave it to the rest of us to try and "choke it down." LOL
