I have an older Ski Nautique and I've got some scratches on the sides from banging against docks etc. What's the best way to remove the scratches. Is there a special fiberglass wax or rubbing compound I should use ? Should I get a power buffer ? Or just take it to someone to buff everything out ? Got some areas of oxidation, etc as well. thanks
Not sure what you mean by 'scratches", but if they are gouges you this advice will not help. I've used a product by 3M called Fiberglass Restorer with Wax. Available at Walmart. You must use a rotating buffer (not one of the sissy vibrating buffers) with a wool pad. Buff the stuff in and continue buffing the area until it shines--it works.
Call Blue Creek only if you have to much money, they charged my boss (who bought his pontoon there last year)for cleaning his 24 foot pontoon $375 and when we called to see what the hell was going on they explained the labor plus the acid cost $135 for a gallon was what it added up to be. Acid cost less than $25 if you buy it at the parts store. Just had one of our managers pontoons done for $80 and they(Professional Car Detail in Opelika) even buffed the pontoons with a compound.Steve Northington at Cat House Performance Marine wet sanded and buffed my boat and I was very pleased.
What I need to do is put up a sign to have your pontoon detailed for a $180 and I would pick up and deliver back to you shiney and clean.
Thanks Scarabman. Blue Creek once tried to sell me a quart of outdrive oil for $16.00. Russell (as bad as they are) only wanted $8.95. I'm in the market for a pontoon boat, but I wouldn't even consider Blue Creek. Why do you want to get ripped off?
about $12.00 at Car Quest in Dadeville. By the way, that stuff works wonders on the scum lines of fibergalss boats. I've used it for years. Cut it 4 to 1 with water, and brush on with a soft brush, wash off after a couple of minutes. Repeat if necessary.
FYI... Blue Creek and The Ski Club in Montgomery are owned by the same people. (Just in case any of you out there need to order boat parts.) I have unfortunately been screwed by both of them. Shame on me!
FYI...The Ski Club was shut down. I can get the scratches and the oxidation off of the Nautique. I don't do that type of work in the summer though. It cuts in to my party time.
I'm not sure what the whole story is behind the $375 pontoon cleaning. I know exactly what Blue Creek charges for cleanings and for a complete detail and an acid wash on a 24' pontoon you wouldn't be anywhere close to that price. The cost for a complete acid wash is barely $135...labor and materials included.
As for the price of the oil......Blue Creek charges MSRP on OEM petroleum products.
