I was going through some of my dad's old papers and found two interesting items. The first is a topographical map of the area between Alex City at the north, Tallassee at the southern most part of the map, it shows little further west than Loachapoka and camp Hill to the east and the town of Kowaliga to the west. Its referred to as the dadeville quadrangle. This map was reprinted in 1945, the survey date is 1901-1902. So there is no Lake on the map. It shows the various ferries that crossed the river, Double Bridge Ferry, near Cherokee Bluffs, McCarty Ferry between Irma and Suzanna, Robinson Ferry, Walker Ferry and others as the river turned north westward.
It shows the Central of Georgia train line coming out of Alex Cityto dadeville. It looks like the train line changed names in Dadeville to the Macon Columbus and Birmingham line.
Anyway, its really neat to see the area pre-lake.

The other document describes reservoirs in the Mobile River basin. Mitchell, Jordan, Martin, Smith and Harris Lakes and their dams are described. Martin Dam shows a drainage area of 2984 square miles. It says" lake is formed by a combination arch and gravilty concrete dam with a riprap earth embankment on left or east end.Spillway is equipped with 20 modified stoney-type gates, 30 feet wide and 16 ft high. Storage began in the summer of 1926 and the powerhouse was completed in 1927. Total capacity at elevation 490.00 ft( top of gates) is 1,622,000 acre-ft of which 1,375,000 acre-ft is controlled storage above elevation of 430 ft. minimum pool. Lake is used for power development.
ExTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD. .Maximum daily contents since October 1, 1940 was 1,648,900 acre-ft on April 14 1979 when elevation was 490.69ft. The lowest recorded was 555,000acre-ft was on June 29, 1941 elevation 452.12

Hope this hasn't been too boring-this is an amazing lake with a wonderful rich history and it will survive floods and droughts and so hopefully will we.

Do you think the map could be reproduced? What a great historic item it would make for a lake home.

What a great idea-I'll check into whether or not it can be reproduced. I'm going to frame this one at some time. It amazes me that its been floating around this place for as long as it has and its in great condition. I also found my dads letter from Alabama Power granting him the lease on our place dated 1954 !!

About what size is the map?

...as this map would be really cool to see.

A picture of it would be grand, or somewhere we might find one...or something.

I hate to be a mooch and would be willing to help.

But, you're going to have some interest in this thing.

Thanks!

its about 16 x 20 inches the background is obviously aged but very clean, light tan, the topo marks are brown, and the Tallapoosa river is light blue.

You can take it to Kinko's or the like and they can scan it , even at that size. They can burn it on a CD, it's only like $3. If you email me I will be glad to put it on my site. If you don't want it online but just want to share with friends, then other printers like kinko's can print out a large scale photo.

of the rights to the HOBO's, and allow the sell of copies to members for a small profit.

Might need a legal opinion first as to whether there are still any publisher rights in existence.

I would also buy a copy.

Does it show a bridge crossing Lowaliga Creek from Irma? I found a steel bridge structure while diving, but can't place it on any maps.... It is in-line with the road leading from Irma towards Suzannah

While probably not as good as the map Windview describes, the link below has a color Tallapoosa County soil survey map from 1909 that shows things as they once were. Island Home, Ozella, and Rover are just a few of the places shown which no longer exist.

I think I located the approximate placement of my home on an Elmore Co. map from 1903......sure wish I could go back in time and buy a few hundred acres there!

You are a glutton for punishment if you want to own a couple acres of land. Much better to own all the acres of Lake we all jointly own and share. LOL

Yes, either he is hiding quietly with his map clutched tight, or he is working hard on a plan to make a mint from selling reproductions to everybody on the lake. I'm hoping for the latter.

I haven't got it clutched too tight for fear of wrinkling it.!!!! But you are right I am trying to find the best way to reproduce it nicely. I agree it would make a great piece of art for any lake house. But I also have original postcards from Castaway Island showing the old train and tram and slides, so who knows!?! Maybe I can retire early on this. LOL

I understand, but just please allow the HOBOs an opportunity to raise some funds and share the map with your neighbors. That is if they want to.

I do not know if they would want to or not. I have an old map I may donate to the cause but it is after the Lake and I found it in my old cabin. It is a rather old map of the Lake and is framed.

I think you can contact either Osms or Maverick to help support the HOBOs. I could be a bit presumptive.

I do not represent the HOBOS other than being a member.

It would be a great way to support your community.
