Maybe someone can help with my problem. Across the water from my place someone has placed a very bright light. It is on all night long and it ruins my view of the stars, and everything else. It is located on a pier. Either the owner is very inconsiderate or unaware that his 1,000,000 candlepower light might ruin people's enjoyment of the lake.

To me, this is a bigger problem than big boats. Suggestions? The Alabama legislature?

They probably don't look at the stars and aren't interested in the two meteor shows that come each year, the Leonids and the Perseids. So it's never crossed their minds that they may be interfering with someone else's view. Ignorance is bliss.

This slough has many houses that keep their outdoor lights burning throughout the night. I've got eighteen of them on the house but don't burn mine. Early last year someone decided to put a bright street light high atop a hill two miles across the water. Can't see a star to the north at night because of the light pollution it causes. I won't resort to the pellet gun so I just accept the reality that I'll have to leave my home to get a decent view of the heavens.

.... asking nicely? My neighbor had a light that was annoying another neighbor due the way it was mounted and shining on the other pier. One came to the other in a civilized way and ask if there was anything he could do to get him to change it. He offered to help in any way, financially or with free labor. Shortly thereafter a new light was mounted that still burns, but does not shine in the other guys face when he is on his pier. The guy was NOT AWARE of the fact that his light was bothering anyone till he was told. He is a big fisherman, so he uses the light to draw the fish, the other guy understood this and respected his right to enjoy his recreation also.

Bottom line... CIVILIZED conversation will work in MOST cases.
