I know that I remember reading something about what 490.0 means. Is it a measure about sea level or is it actually a relationship other than that? I don't mean to sound stupid, but somewhere in the back of my mind I remember a discussion on the forum about it and I was trying to explain it to a friend. Could someone enlighten me? Thanks

To the best of my knowledge you are correct and it is 490 feet above sea level.

Thanks so much. I probably didn't pay good enough attention when I read it the first time. It was a little complicated for my retired brain. NOW....does that mean when we read that the lake is at 489.5, does that mean it is .5 feet from full or 1.5 feet from full? In that posting, it mentioned a date of Jan 1, 08 that the change would become effective.
Thanks again.

I know it's confusing. Alabama Power is still using the Martin Datum elevation, so 490.0 feet is full pool and 489.5 makes us down 6 inches. If they were using MSL for elevation, the levels would be 491.0 and 490.5 respectively. Lake Martin.com is showing the lake level on its chart as MSL when in fact the numbers are Martin Datum.
