I'm looking at the available Hotmaps SD cards for my Lowrance HDS 5. It will only get used on Lake Martin and I rarely fish (but I do like to play with electronics). Any input on the premium vs platinum card from those using them on the lake? Other ideas or Options? Thanks.

As always I defer to my internal GPS. It is easy to load. Instead of the card, use that money for fuel, ride the shorelines and learn the lake. Then you will have internal GPS = Go Places by Sight.
I know how you 'heavy equipment operators' rely on electronics, but just consider the entire lake as a VFR zone....lol.

I've been doing that for a long time, but it's an IFR world under the surface that I want to see and explore....and I do fish on occasion. It's just a matter of whether the platinum package has any worthwhile "toys" for Lake Martin.

At the recommendation of a few fisherman and boat dealer, I had the Lowrance installed on my new boat. I like it so far. I'm hoping someone will have specific knowledge of the differences in mapping packages as they pertain directly to Lake Martin.

I am familiar with the use of a GPS in a vehicle but know nothing about their capabilities on the water. Can you punch in a street address for a water front lot and let the GPS guide you via water?

Cannot remember why as has been about 3 years ago, but I did some extensive research on the Premium vs. Platinum maps for the Lowrance and decided the Platinum really did not provide any huge benefits on Lake Martin, so purchased the Premium.
Think the Platinum might have been a better choice if you were going to be utilizing such in different lakes throughout the SE or maybe even the Gulf, cannot remember exactly.
Anyway purchased the Premium and even shows the buoys on the lake, etc.

I think that's where I'm at, but I'm also curious about the 3D mapping and if it covers bottom structure.

Now I remember why I purchased the HotMaps Premium as my lake neighbors Lowrance was not compatible with the Platinum, so made my decision easier.
Platinum is only available for the following Lowrance and yours is one of them:
Lowrance® HDS-5 / 5 Baja / 5m / 7 / 7m / 8 / 8m / 10 / 10m

You need to put in the coordinates of where you want to go and you can mark and or label almost anything you want for future reference. Mapping programs allow you to "see" bottom contour on the lake well ahead of your intended path of travel, and have many points of interest are incorporated.

I remember playing with Navionics once, and while it provided some good detail of the lake bottom, it did not have EVERYTHING on there. For instance, it missed a very large rock and point near our cabin, but that doesn't bother me because that just means fewer fishermen will know about it.

the premium edition last night. Yeah, I don't expect it to be perfect, but with the Lowrance sonar and the navionics maps it should be fun.

I ordered on Tuesday and it came Fed Ex on Friday all the way from Washington State. If anyone is thinking about buying this product, this was the best price I could find and the shipping speed was a pleasant surprise. The store is called Cascade GPS in Bellingham WA.
