Welcome Steve!

I've seen several floating piers. I guess it just depends on where you look. I'm near Stemly Bridge and there are about 6 upstream of me.

There are a couple of good dock building companies on the lake I think. We would probably all have a different opinion of who is the best. So in an effort to not start a war, I won't name any names. But I was very pleased with the guy that did mine and plan to have him back for phase 2 soon.

To float or not to float just depends on where you are and how you want to use it. I was considering a floater but decided against it after I saw how rough the water gets around here on a busy weekend.

Good luck and welcome again.

Peace,
<><

Welcome,

Where is your place? You see a few floating piers around but I think the APCO has put some sort of restrictions on what you can use to float the pier and most people have been building a stationary pier. I know that they were restricting foam as the floats but do not know what the actual requirements were.

My pier was already there when I bought my house last year so I did not have much of a choice.

The other Steve......

It really just depends on where your place is. Floating on the main channel would get interesting at times. There are couple in Stemley Cove where I am but I think they make sense for them due to their lot. It doesn't make sense on mine way at the very end of the cove.

I do know that by the year 2010 styrofoam floaters will not be allowed, The contractor name is shoreline management, will try to get a number for you. additonally someone posteed a link to the rules for piers but i can't remember where. There is a search you can run on this site for keywords try that and see what you get....... David

I posted the rules for piers at one time but it was concerning Lake Martin not Logan Martin and I just said that the rules should be similar.

They were.......

This is regulations for Lake Martin and there should be something similar for Logan Martin.

PERMITS WILL NOT BE APPROVED AND/OR CONSTRUCTION WILL NOT BE ALLOWED WITHOUT A FULLY APPROVED PERMIT AND ALL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS. (Signed permit, deed copy, signed sketch, signed guidelines etc.)

Sketches must show all existing facilities with their dimensions and locations as well as the proposed locations (with dimensions) of all new facilities. All sketches must be submitted on 8.5x11 standard paper. They must show the locations of all proposed constructions and the proximity to the shoreline and property lines. For seawall constructions, sketches must show distance from full pool shoreline. Sketches for piers, boathouses. Ramps, boat slips, etc. are to show size, length, width and if with a roof, height and dimension of roof. Specify type of materials to be used. Your sketch must be signed.

Lots with less than 100 linear feet of shoreline maybe restricted or may not be eligible for structures within the power pool area of the reservoir

Any and all lake front property construction (piers, ramps, boathouses, boat slips, etc.) should be set a minimum of 15 feet from your property line. This separation should be maintained for a reasonable distance within the lake area. This distance will be determined by Alabama Power Company on a case by case basis. Pavilions, gazebos or any other appurtenant structure "cannot" be enclosed or walled except that screening may be used for the exterior walls of said structure. No satellite dishes or similar structures may be placed below the normal high water level of any reservoir. No garbage or foreign materials (remnants of building material, old appliances, tires, etc.) are to be placed below the high water level of any reservoir. In a narrow slough, no structure can extend over 1 /3 way across the slough.

PIERS: Should not exceed 50' in length, should not exceed 420 sq. feet. Piers 4 ft. and less in width are considered walkways and will be included in length, but will not be included in the square footage guideline.

FLOATING DOCK(S): Floating dock(s) attached to a stationary pier should not exceed 12 feet beyond the stationary pier and no more than 290 square feet. If the floating dock is to be built with a walkway instead of a stationary pier, the dimensions will fall under the stationary pier category. Must use approved polystyrene. Certain restrictions may apply according to seasonable water levels.
