Anyone know of a place that has a decent selection of canoes at reasonable prices? We thought we were going to buy one last year but opted out due to the water situation but may just pick one up this year if we can find a decent deal. Some great deals on the evil-bay but shipping and not being able to inspect are factors. I would be willing to drive to the Atlanta area or ??? If I knew I could pick one out etc...

If you're willing to go to Birmingham you can't beat Alabama Small Boats. Great selection (new and used), great prices, great people who run the place.

They have just opened their new place in Birmingham; I'm sure it's great, but I really liked visiting their old place, which was a large hut in the middle of the woods, alongside the Cahaba River. You could pick a boat to test paddle, carry it a few feet and plop it in the river.

Thanks for the reply... I did find them on Yahoo. Def gonna have to head that way and take a look!

We hit all the 'local' outdoor shops last year I think the best selection and prices were at Bass Pro Shops in Prattville. We were also told that Sam's had one last year but never did get around to checking that one out.

I agree on Ala Small Boats if you want a quality canoe. Academy usually has the very heavy and less durable models.

Also try Lake Purdy in B'ham. They usually have a handful of used boats for sale. (205) 991-9107

I bought mine from Sam's several years ago. I think it was $398 and a great canoe. They always have them in the spring, but once their initial stock is gone, they don't reorder until the next spring.

I have heard of a place over in the Prattville vicinity handling high performance canoes. I think they specialize in combining two canoes together with a cockpit in between.

I seemed to of forgotten the name of the place, but it had a stange ring to it. LOL

Thanks everyone for the replies and tips.

As for the place in Prattville... just a tad out of our budget but sure would be nice. I think I can afford the fuel for the 'regular' one much more so than that one with the funny name!

As far as brands and styles go, I have loved my "Old Town" canoe and would buy no other.
Added a side saddle motor mount easily on the gunwales and for comfort, added the birch web seat backs. Great accessories available.

If you are looking on the cheaper side for canoes, I recommend both Academy Sports for a new one. Or look on CraigsList.org for a used one. You can look in the cities near you. That keeps you from fighting the e-slay shipping curse, and no-one is hit with any commision fees. Just remember craigslist does not have a protective payypal system, so only purchase items in person and at the time that you pick up the item.

I picked up one from craigslist in the Atlanta area for $225 used, and have been very pleased with it. I think the same canoe at Academy would have run about $350 or $375.

Thanks everyone! This is all very good info... here something I found at Alabama Small Boats....

You should watch out for high-density polyethylene as it is an inferior material. Alabama Small Boats does not carry any high-density polyethylene. This material is much more comparable to "milk-jug" plastic. it is proven not to hold up to the elements, cannot be repaired, does not hold its form, and is much heavier than rotomolded polyethylene. Coleman, Pelican, Waterquest, and other such canoe manufactures are the ones to watch out for on the market. The bottom line is this; canoes made of high-density do not paddle well because of design, and more importantly they will not last long.

Just drag mine off the shore, leave it at the end of the slough full of water with a crack in it. Worked for some neighbor kids last fall.......

Let me catch em and see what happens!! LOL Sorry to hear about that...

We sat on our dock last year and watched three boys attempt to remove one of those big fun island things we bought for the our kids. They swam up, pulled the anchor and started to drag it away right in plain site of us.... I got up and slowly waded out and made it about half way before they turned and saw me. When asked what they thought they were doing they said they didn't know it belonged to anyone. OK... sure. I made em haul it back and anchor it. We used to leave it out over the weekends but no more. You just can't trust anyone any more.... even if they live a couple doors down!!
