What does the re-election of Angela Dorothea Merkel in Germany have to tell us?

- German unemployment is near a two-decade low

- Germany’s budget deficit has vanished

- Germany’s economy is the largest and most powerful in the EU. (Without Germany, the Euro would have already collapsed).

- Dr. Merkel is considered to be the second most powerful person in Europe and is de facto leader of the EU.

- Merkel insists on getting control of government spending (austerity) in exchange for aid to Greece et al.
- Merkel insists that government stay out of private matters

So what has motivated Frau Dr Merkel ?

- She has a Ph.D. in Quantum Chemistry (not law!)

- Her rise to power involves working accomplishments and leadership in a diversity of REAL issues (e.g. energy, labor, environment, ect).

And most of all:

- She spent 45 years living under communist governments!

Now, what will it take for eligible voters in the USA to see that an experienced, accomplished leader is a capable leader? Are US voters ready for a capable leader? Do US voters even want a capable leader? Are we beyond the tipping point, with society as we knew it in the throes of a death spiral? Will we have to settle on the bottom before we reach out for a capable leader? It is disheartening to think that we may have to live through yet another term led by an unaccomplished inexperienced socialist if Hillary also rallies the ill informed. Heard a great story a couple of weeks ago. Seems there was an August election in a large metro area, 2 term incumbent was known as dirty yet still leading in the polls against his challenger, a local businessman. The metro area demographics were pretty evenly split by party and race. A coalition of concerned citizens rented EVERY 15 passenger church van available within 150 miles and left them sitting at the rental agencies Friday through Election Day. The influence of the preachers and street money were greatly diminished and the final tallies had the challenger winning nearly 55% of the votes cast. Those folks fought back and secured the win they deserved.

It is interesting to watch Germany's ascendency in Europe once again.  Oh how history repeats itself.  Interesting comparison to the Frogs after WW2.  In Germany, almost immediately after the fighting stopped the Germans were busy cleaning up and rebuilding.  Months (and longer) after the fighting stopped in France and the place was still a mess.  Too busy enjoying the easy life while others did the hard work.....sort of like the war itself.

As for the U.S., there is still hope although it is diminishing.  I almost feel like we need to hit rock bottom before the masses will wake up but who knows, if another Reagan hits the stage maybe we can recover our national sense of dignity.  I am still amazed at the ignorance of the young people that gave TOTUS a second term.  They have signed on for generational theft and a lower standard of living and will not realize it until it is too late.  And unlike our generation, they will not have enough children to pay for the lavish benefits that they are paying for us.  I only feel sorry for kids like mine that realized it and voted against WOTUS......the others are on their own.

In 1972, as a sergeant, I was assigned to G5 for V Corps Artillery (Darmstadt, Ich kann Deutsch sprechen.)

We made occasional visits to our “allies”, the French (they had kicked NATO out of France but still remained associated therewith… somehow… I think. You know the French.)  On crossing into France, I noticed how dull and bedraggled it looked.  Further into France, I began to see bombed out buildings from WWII still standing… more than twenty five years after the war.

The French do not care a whole lot for the Germans (with some good history behind such mistrust). Though, like the French the Germans are VERY liberal socially… the Germans are extremely conservative industrially and economically.  Germany, the economic mainstay of the European Union is a highly productive and efficient country. Now the rest of the EU is envious… not a far state from contempt.

Now that the Euro is in trouble… well, you know Aesop’s fable of the Grasshopper and the Ants.
