And the anti-gun lobby is making it all about the gun.  This young man made threats on social media about what he wanted to do.  Where were his parents - giving him his "social media privacy"?  Why did no one report his threats? Apparently a lot of his former classmates thought he might do something like this.  But it is the gun's fault, and now we'll have another push by the anti-gun lobby to ban the AR.

This will come off as snarky and I don't want it sound that way. Without bringing up Obama or Hillary or Democrats, I'd like a direct answer to a direct question. In your opinion, why is there any need for anyone to own a AR?

Hound, I heard this morning that his dad died a while ago and his mom died around Thanksgiving.  All the signs were there, including him having been reported to the FBI over a post on a youtube site where he said he wanted to become a professional school shooter.  Unfortunately there is no way to force someone like him to get mental health care.  Libs saw to that a while ago.

And of course Democrats would call for more gun control while the bodies are still warm.  It's in their DNA to avoid the real issue and focus on however they can take advantage of a crisis.  This was a law enforcement/mental health failure.  The only amazing thing to me is that he survived the shooting.  Apparently he tried to blend in with the other students that were fleeing.  Glad they caught him and he deserves whatever fate awaits him.  Prayers for all those impacted.

Please wait until at least the dead are buried before you go on a gun control rant.  Guns, bombs, knives, trucks, cars, vans......mentally ill people will always find a way to act on their evil impulses.  Don't get stuck on stupid.

As an owner of several AR15s, having purchased and built many for friends and family - I am not afraid of my firearms jumping out of the locked gun safe and shooting me.

It is a tool when used correctly does its job.  I can ask the same of:

Why does someone need a air nail gun when a regular hammer will suffice?  With a little modification a air nailer can be used to kill at range, or close up.

Why do you need a SUV when a bicycle can get you there?

Why does someone need more then one knife in a home per person? When you only need one steak knife  maybe share it around and keep it locked up.

Different tools have different purposes, Hog hunting with an AR lets you take out more animals that are destroying property.  I have personally used it for this purpose in various states for farmers and ranchers where it has become a problem.  It is a tool when properly used does not randomly kill people.  Killing coyotes that kill livestock for a few farmers in my area would be another use that I have used one for recently.   Hired by a golf course once to exterminate beaver who were backing up a creek onto the green before we used a tractor to pull the dam apart.

This chithead who shot up the school was voted most likely to come back and shoot up the school, was expelled, wore a gas mask back to school with the intent to murder people.  He broke how many gun free laws, gun laws, acts of violence to do what he did?

Do you honestly believe that one more law would have slowed down someone with such horrific intent?  There are other semi automatic weapons avialable on the market, many with 20+ round clips.  You are showing ignorance in the fact that you and other ignorant people state "why is there any need for anyone to own a AR?"

Do you not think that a Marlin model 60 .22 caliber rifle, which used to be the first gun the majority of country children owned,  with 14 rounds could not do similar damage?  I can remember having contests as a youth to see who could knock down more cans in a specific amount of time.  Had turned down tubing to make pre loaded speed loaders in metal shop to allow faster loading times as anyone who has ever put them one at a time into the magazine knows it is slow - there are ways to speed up any process.

No Obama or Hillary or Democrats

I have one for home defense and sport shooting.  Really bugs me when people decide to focus on the inanimate object rather than the root cause, which in this case appears to be mental illness.

Part of it is the strong desire to do something, anything.  Of course this only applies to people of good will (which excludes most leftists who just want to disarm us so they can shove their Marxist ideology down our throats) who are rightly troubled by these events.  Thirty or fifty years ago this guy would have been committed to a mental institution because he was a theat to himself and others.  Because of left wing whining about rights this is no longer an option until they actually commit a crime.

Part of it is also due to an unwillingness to confront the moral degradation of our society and the cutlure of death and violence, whether it is in the movies, video games or whatnot.  The cultural rot and the elimination of faith from the public arena has consequences and we are seeing them every day.  But solving them is incredibly dificult and would require countercultural actions.....which given the leftist control of the education system every day it seems less and less likely to happen.

So out of frustration or ideological blindness or socialist wet dreams the call is always for banning an inanimate object that on its own just sits there.  Ban AR-15's and you can be sure that when some nutjob like this kid buys one illegally there is going to be no one to stop hom when he starts shooting.  The what will they say or who will they blame?  Sure as heck never seems to be the perpetrator does it?

Phil, I liked your answer.  An AR is nothing more than a tool.  In the hands of someone without a mental illenss and motive, it won't kill anyone.

I see two common denominators in these shooting - one is mental illenss (because you would have to be crazy to want to kill people), adn the other is the kids who are doing these crimes.  I'm sorry, I feel the parents or the legal guardian is at least partially responsible for this happening.  They ignore the signs that are apparent to other people.  Because they don't want to invade their kids privacy, but seeing what they are up to on social media.  In each case, threats were made on line before anything happened.

Fly, the problem was that they FBI would not determine where the shooter was located.  I guess they checked criminal records, but could not find anyting on the young man.

Everytime a shooting takes place, Democrats talk about more gun control laws, but the ones that are on the books are not being enforced.  So why more laws?  More laws is nothing but a CYA for Federal Agencies, so then they can blame local authorities for not knowing.

Casey asks a very serious and reasonable question but do not expect a serous or reasonable answer on this forum.

There is something very very wrong when a 19 year old cannot rent a car or buy a beer but he can buy a semi-automatic rifle!

Who decides "serious" and "reasonable". I see several answers that are both serious and reasonable.  You just don't like them.  I own an AR and the sole purpose I have it is home defense.  Don't hunt, hardly ever go to the range.  But I could not live with myself if we were subjected to a home invasion that led to harm to me or my family...and I was not prepared to defend.

Mr H I'm sure you are one who is included among the ''responsible'' gun owners and I sincerely hope you never become part of the statistics, but the FACT is that statistically you are 3 times more likely to be injured or killed, usually by accident or another unintended action, if you do have a gun in your home than if you don't...and that ain't ''fake'' news!

Glad to know that your home is unarmed and you are unwilling to protect yourself or others - when or if  you get broken into while at home you can tell them it is a gun free zone and they should just scamper away.

Old stat from anti gun Brady  look under did you know about keeping a gun in the homes increases homicide

https://injury.research.chop.edu/violence-prevention-initiative/types-violence-involving-youth/gun-violence/gun-violence-facts-and#.WocJ44MbNhE

Love some of these

  • There are more than 350 million guns in circulation in the United States — approximately 113 guns for every 100 people.
  • 1.7 million children live with unlocked, loaded guns - 1 out of 3 homes with kids have guns.
  • In 2014, 2,549 children (age 0 to 19 years) died by gunshot and an additional 13,576 were injured.

So some simple math age 0-19 years with hundreds of guns at their disposal and randomly sitting around the house loaded and unlocked, 13576 children were injured in some way.  So out of the 350 million guns in the world that are honest law abiding guns and 1.7 million children exposed to the horrors of a loaded unlocked gun somehow  only .8 percent of children are injured in some way.

wow more guns in the USA then people and millions of children live with unlocked and loaded guns.  These millions of guns have decided to not attack people at random

13,576/1.7Million children = ( .0079..)

Annual United States Road Crash Statistics

  • Over 37,000 people die in road crashes each year
  • An additional 2.35 million are injured or disabled
  • Over 1,600 children under 15 years of age die each year
  • Nearly 8,000 people are killed in crashes involving drivers ages 16-20
  • Road crashes cost the U.S. $230.6 billion per year, or an average of $820 per person
  • Road crashes are the single greatest annual cause of death of healthy U.S. citizens traveling abroad

So I would say that if you driving a car you are more likely to get in a wreck then if not, if you know someone who owns a car you are way more likely to become injured or disabled by a car then by a gun that was left loaded and unlocked in a home.  So what that means for chitheads is please stay home unplug your electrical devices and wrap yourself in 12 layers of bubblewrap and ducttape and put yourself in a thick steel box to make sure to protect yourself fully.  If you can then bury that box  several feet underground you are 100% less likely to be harmed by firearms, automobiles and other of lifes unknowns.  Please make sure to include a way to continue to breath, take in a healty diet and fluids and the ability to take care of waste products.

Please make sure to write your congressperson to demand sensible automobile control legislation.

Now that I have offended the liberals on the site lets see how long till it gets flagged as inappropriate.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5398625/Demon-voices-school-gunman-attack-cops-called-39-times.html#ixzz57ICn8Awq

  • He told authorities that voices in his head told him how to carry out the shooting
  • According to his legal team he suffers from autism, depression and has other significant psychological problems
  • Police were called to his family's home in Parkland, Florida 39 times since 2010
  • Calls were for a range of reasons including 'mentally ill person,' 'child/elderly abuse,' 'domestic disturbance' and several others.
  • Cruz's adoptive mother died in November from pneumonia and her husband died years before of a heart attack
  • Cruz was kicked out of the high school last year for allegedly getting into a fight

He was fostered to start with, so God only knows where/who his real parents are.  Adoptive parents both have passed.  Police were called to his home 39 times in less then 8 years, was expelled from school for discipline reasons and was probably on psychological drugs.

Kid was a nut and had major problems - and passed the background check to purchase the firearm legally after someone with his name posted to youtube about " "Im going to be a professional school shooter" in September 2017.

Seems to me that the background check system has issues and I am still waiting for some common sense ideas vs BS ideas.

https://nypost.com/2018/02/16/fbi-failed-to-investigate-tip-on-school-shooter-last-month/

The FBI was warned last month that Nikolas Cruz was an armed psycho who might shoot up a school — but it didn’t bother investigating, the agency admitted Friday.

“A person close to” Cruz called the agency’s tipline on Jan. 5 and reported the 19-year-old had a “desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts” and there was “potential of him conducting a school shooting,” the FBI said in a statement.

But the agency said it failed to pass on any of that information to its Miami field office, even thought its own protocols say he “should have been assessed as a potential threat to life.”

Guess they were focused so much on Russia and "matters" they could be bothered to help protect children.

What they should have done was report that the guy was a cut out between Trump and the Russians.  They would have had 300 agents at his house within 24 hours.  I know there are a lot of dedicated field agents in the FBI but I am beginning to seriously wonder how much damage Obama's political appointees did to their effectiveness.

I am starting to think that they are unable to do more then one thing at a time.  If that is the case maybe there is something to this Trump obstruction charge.  The FBI was so focused on Russia/Trump that they could not investigate Hillary properly, or credible school shooting threats.

Once Comey was fired they got stuck and are unable to move past the Russia/Trump matters.

Just saw this in the news today.  I seem to recall that before the 9-11 attacks that FBI received a tip from a field office that they didn't pay attention to either.  You know someone is in Deep Dodo for this one.  I don't know how the FBI will be able to face the parents of the kids that were killed.

I think what we are seeing is what happens when the FBI becomes politicized.  The are supposed to be a law enforcement agency, not a political entity.  They are wasting a lot of time investigating political issues and taking their eye off the ball of what they should be doing.

I also understand that on Tuesday, Trump signed a bill repealing someting put in place by Obama that will make it easier for the mentally ill to by a gun.  I understand about privacy, but we need to make sure we keep the guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.  As it stands now, from my reading, I understand that the only way you can determined to be mentally ill is by court ruling.

Regarding the Florida shooter, I don't know how many thing are really wrong with him and how much is the work of his defense team working to see that he isn't executed.  Don't forget that after the shooting, he disguised himself as one of the students, he walked to Walmart to buy a drink, and then went to McDonalds.  Reports are now that he is showing remorse, is saying he hears voices, etc. He has pleaded guilty, but I wonder if his defense team isn't working to get him declared insane and get him committed to a criminal psychiatric hospital.  Unlike most shooters, he didn't kill himself.

You know, the same guy who said people should vote out any politician not for more gun control.  Turns out their deputies were called to the kids house 39 times over the last several years.  The only one who should be voted out is this lousy sherriff.

Well sadly I think it is probably all too common expecially with juveniles.  I know a local kid who stole and broke into every house in the neighborhood.  Everything from kayaks, ATVs to firearms.  He would go away for a while and come right back.  Now he is no longer underage - has beat his GF when she would not "take care of him" and we called the cops many times when he would be beating her in the front yard.  He would run, she would not press charges, black eyes were just not enough for the cops to do something.  He got her pregnant, was still beating her at least weekly, until she presses charges nothing they could do.  Lives with his grandmother, she had him locked up 3-4 times for beating her as well, she would drop the charges after about a week and poof the magic criminal back in the neighborhood.

Sometimes a menace is just that, and the only way for others to be safe is when he finally steps over yet another of 100 lines and cops take care of it, or he pisses off the wrong drug dealer/thug, breaks in while someone is home and becomes a statistic.

1. We have a lot of "in trouble" kids who could flip like this one, but you never know which ones. Probalby can't lock them all up.

2. Privacy vs Security is going to be a sticky issue.  One man's weird and another one's normal.  What is normal?  What in traits we see as not normal will lead to a killer.  If you take on the "if you see something, say something" then you will need to hope that the authorities protect you, or that the subject does not know you told.  Tough issue.

3. Was the shooter on a list as "Mentally Ill"?  If he is mentally ill, should not have gotten a gun, but has a ready Defense.

4.  The FBI can be called to task on the "I want to be a professional school shooter" if they were told and if they saw who posted it.  They should have followed up on that.

5.  School had just one entrance, according to reports.  How does an expelled guy get in?

6.  Shooter took Uber to the school.  He had an AR15 and a gas mask.  I guess all this was in a bag?

7.  Probably no new gun control law will make any difference.  If AR15 is declared off limits, then another method will be developed.  We have a lot of sick people, who unfortunately see their 15 minutes of fame in this way.  Similar to the terrorist who sees blowing up himself and others with a bomb and his thing.

8.  Should movie directors be held accountable?

9  Should Rap Music be held accountable?

10.  Should Video Game producers be held accountable?

On 8 9 and 10 we have always had violence in these, but today seems we have more folks who are ready and willing to turn theatre into reality.

what to do?  what to do?

First of all, there is a lot of misinformation out there about what ARs are and aren't.  I can't believe that half the people on social media think the AR is an automatic weapon.  I hear words like rapid fire.  There are also a lot of people that don't seem to know what semi-automatic means.

I have been writing extensively about what I think lies at the bottom of all this.  It has to do with our society.  We are rotting from the inside out.  It's very violent video games that desensitize kids to killing and death, it's the lack to discipline, and respect, it's that kids feel empty inside because people give them stuff instead of time and attention.  We are disassociated with each other because we no longer tallk, we text, we email, and rarely actually speak on the phone.  It's seeing a family out to dinner and everyone has their smart phones and are paying attention to them instead of each other.  So many kids have no manners, because they have never actually had dinner at a table.

My feeling is that they can pass all the gun bans and controls they want, but if they don't have guns, they'll go to bombs or something else.

Yes, I read that not only the FBI blew it but the sheriff's office too.  Phil, you nailed it again.  People are actually afraid to report kids, because nothing will happen and then  they'll prey on you.

You nailed the cause.  It's the culture.  That's why Democrats want to ban an inanimate object instead of actually doing something positive.   If they went after the root cause it would be an attack on their main source of votes, positive media coverage and campaign donations.

Sorry l cannot find that study but will post if l do.

The NRA and their backers claim that more guns make us safer.  If so how is it that we have the world's highest murder rate while also having by far the highest per capita gun ownership?  A simple question that still has not been realistically answered by anyone on this froum!

There is a related study done by the National Institutes of Health in 2003 comparing the US with the average of the other 23 most economically advanced nations (this was of course before the congress passed legislation specifically forbidding NIH and CDC from even studying gun deaths).

1/   Gun sales are 19.5 times higher

2/   Gun homicide rates are 22 times higher for men

3/   Gun homicide rates are 11.4 times higher for women

4/   Gun homicide rates are 42.7 times higher for those 15 to 24 years old

5    Gun suicide rates are 5.8 times higher

6/   Gun related accidental deaths are 5.2 times higher

You may not like the statistical facts but that does not make them any less true and we are foolish to continue to brush them aside!

I think I saw that the Florida shooter killed 17 people and injured another 14-15 in six minutes. If you think having this type gun in your home will keep you and your family safe in a home invasion, do you walk around all day with it loaded and slung over your shoulder or do you think the intruder who probably has a handgun is going to just stand there while you unlock your gun safe and get your gun? If you don't have it locked up and unloaded, I hope there aren't any children around your home, because I can't imagine the agony of parents, grandparents, family friends who have to live with knowing their gun allowed a child or friend of child to accidentally shoot another child just playing around out of natural child's curiosity. If you need this type gun for hunting , you should give up hunting. It is obviously not your forte. I'm sure most people with this type gun are law abiding citizens but that doesn't mean we can't have sensible gun laws and sensible funding for mental health issues. SIX MINUTES. These students will be voting soon.

Yes, that is true.  He had no way of knowing another mentally ill person would take a gun to school.  One thing is that the government doesn't seem to have any way to know or enforce anything if you lie on the FFL.  The form does ask about mental illness, but it is just a check in a box.  Same as being convicted of a felony.

No, I keep a loaded shotgun for that.  Um, it is possible to have the gun available when you need it and keep it locked up or trigger locked when kids are around.

Yes, people do use these for hunting.  They weigh much less than standard wooden stock rifles, and they can be more accurate depending the scope you put on it.

I'm really tired of correcting people that want to post things that are just flat out wrong.  They want to debate, but they have no facts.  They post articles by other idiots that have no idea what they are talking about.

BTW, I understand that the teenagers are planning a day to boycott school and then they are planning a march in Washington to "demand" gun control.  Wonder what groups are sponsoring this.  Like it will do anything at all.  Just another "feel good" exercise.

What? Wait, Talullahhound. You recently posted something that was just 'flat out wrong' and no one should be tired of correcting you or anyone else about what is posted that is not true but presented as a fact. Opinions are opinions and we all have them and they are not up to debate, but facts are facts and despite Ms. Conway, there aren't alternative facts.

There is no way to get liberals to address the real issue here.  That is a lost cause.  They think because of the look of an AR-15 if must work differently than a semi automatic pistol....which if course they do not.  They cannot and will not ever admit that their minions in academia, entertainment and news are the cause of the corrosion of our society and that their ideology is a failure.  Therefore, they blame the instrument that a mentally ill person uses.  That way they can feel good about themselves without ever really doing anything positive or admit that they are the cause.

I'm talking about those that insist on calling an AR an automatic assault rifle which it is not.  It is semi-automatic.  Fully automatic rifles are used by the military.  I have exposure to gun magazines and I have never seen an AR marketed as an "assault" riifle.  People have said that these shooters are "spraying" bullets which is not possible with a semi-automatic.  Things like that, that are easily researched.  I have no problems with opinions, but if you want to debate, debate from a position of basic facts.

I read an interesting article about the use of brain chemistry alterating drugs (such as SSRIs) and the possibility that these may be causing extreme aggression in these shooters.  Or that maybe they are stopping their medication without medical supervision and that can cause extreme side effects.  I have long had a problem with Drs. other than psychiatrists prescribing these medicines.  Drs. who may not have studied how these can affect each individuals or who do not get the dosage correct to help the problem.  The drug lobby is at least as influential in Congress as the NRA.

But no one looks at that.

I know, it's hopeless.  But I feel like the least I can do is provide facts, even when they don't believe them.

The interviews with the students have received a LOT of attention, praising them for their cause.  But you are so right about the misunderstanding of the guns.  One of the first students I saw interviewed said something like "He must have been using an Automatic Rifle"

I actually feel sorry for these kids.  They are in an emotional state, made worse by the fact that they are teenagers and have never been out in the world - and they are being exploited by the anti-gun forces and the media.  Just like those poor black parents whose thug gets himself killed by the police, and Al Sharpton shows up to exploit them, push the race card, and make like they are part of some "important" movement.

I ask you, who will organize this "march on Washington" (and pay for it) and who will sponsor the "walk out" of schools.

Oh, and today I saw a petition for one of the kids killed who was a member of the ROTC and died in his uniform.  They are demanding he be given a funeral with full mililtary honors.  Unfortunately, they only had 17,000 signatures and the WH doesn't look at petitions with less than 100,000 signatures. So this will be another thing to blame on Trump.

I'm sure he died heroically, and he deserves respect for trying to help others.  But a full military funeral?  That may be a bit too much, since he didn't die serving his country.
