The stupidity of banning Russian oil

The more I look into this the more I realize what a monumental mistake this is and to the extent I bought into the notion that we are funding Russia's invasion of Ukraine the more wrong headed I was. To wit, oil is fungible. Even if we ban the purchase of Russian oil someone else will buy it. If we really want to punish Russia the very best way to do that is to do everything in our power to lower oil prices and reduce the revenue they get on a per barrel basis. They only have one way to keep revenue up when prices drop and that is to sell more which further depresses the price.
As I can now see the only thing this accomplishes is to punish the American consumer and push the price of oil up thereby benefiting Russia with more petrodollars at lower rates of production. And what can we do? Drill baby drill. We need to expand domestic production, open ANWAR, finish the Keystone pipeline, promote fracking......ya know, all the stuff we did prior to Dementia Joe that made us a net exporter and kept prices low. But don't expect Dementia Joe to do the right thing as he is controlled by environmental whackos that appear to be cheering on WW3.. And the Saudi's realize this and are loving it and have told Dementia Joe to pound sand. Back to begging for oil on the world market.....just another example of his America Last agenda.

That and it gives them a great excuse for why gas costs are high and still going up.
The media is already pushing the "Putin Price Hike"

Governor Holcomb cracked a joke about his state: “We got the Indy500 and we like to go fast.”
Joe Biden interrupted Governor Holcomb and said, “A gallon of gas is down 14% today.”
Biden apparently confused the price of Brent crude and a gallon of gas.
“Brent crude fell more than 17%, or $22, during a sharp selloff before recovering some of it to trade down $17.16, or 13.4%, at $110.82 a barrel at 2:02 p.m. ET (1902 GMT). U.S. crude was down $15.44, or 12.5%, at $108.26.” – Reuters reported.

It's really about optics. Polls show Americans don't believe we are doing enough to stop the war in Ukraine, and they wanted not to buy the oi from Russia. We only import 3% of our oil from Russia. This allow DJ to look like he is doing something and listening to Americans and it gives an excuse for why the price of gas is going up. Who is going to complain about the price of gas, when we see civilians being killed in cold blood by Putin. Besides this gives support to Biden's agenda to save the planet by buying electric cars.
Kamala is in Poland to make the announcement that we are providing a few more billion to Ukraine and probably will throw a few more billion in protecting Poland. Any time an official goes anywhere, something is being give away. It's akward since the US has put the kabash the Migs for Ukraine. Maybe she's over there to explain that.

I agree that the public seems to be behind this move. I was initially until I did some reading and gave it some thought. This move is like drinking your own poison hoping someone else dies. It won't matter a bit to Putin....he'll sell his oil to someone else and enjoy the higher prices caused by our own missteps. It's amazing to watch how leftists have suddenly become war hawks over Ukraine. Enforcing a no-fy zone over Ukraine is a certain way to get us into WW3. It is what it is but I have to gack every time they blame high gas prices on Russia. Gas prices rose steadily under Dementia Joe and more than the current spike. Of course if they keep up with what they are doing they will be able to blame more of the $6 a gallon gas on Russia than senile Joe's feckless energy policies.

This must be California where taxes on gasoline are the highest in the country and environmental regs add even more. Same gas in Alabama is almost $2 per gallon cheaper.....wonder why? I don't.

On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, the Mobil on La Cienega across from the Beverly Center had customers despite its $6.95 price ($7.55 for the many buying premium).
When reached at his office, the owner and operator of the gas station, Charles Khalil, said that there’s no economic mystery behind his prices: People shopping around the Beverly Center are just willing to pay.
He’s operated the location since 1990 and kept the prices above average since the beginning. “I always kept my pricing even, my profitability and everything even, 30 years to today, always the same,” Khalil said.
With land so valuable, his mortgage payments are high, he said, and after his franchise agreement expires in a few years he expects he’ll sell. “It doesn’t pay to be a gas station with the value of the land” in the middle of a shopping district. But charging a premium for fuel has worked for Khalil, he says. “I have never had problems” moving gasoline, he said.

But it is not a free market. The government has artificially restricted supply. If the oil companies were to be free to get permits to drill on leases with a reasonable probability of success and without crippling government regulations LIKE THEY DID UNDER TRUMP, the supply would easily handle demand and the price would plummet to levels LIKE THEY WERE UNDER TRUMP.

The station is just a smart Republican businessman. He’s sitting in the middle of one of the largest dimokrap cluster-f—ks in the country, except possibly metro-ATL!
