I am personally not all that excited about what happened with the Fakebook whistlebower.  To me that is not even remotely news that these social media orgs prioritize profit over the well being of their users.  That's why I no longer participate in any of them.  They are toxic waste dumps that are destroying our ability to enjoy life and get along with each during normal human interaction.  As much as I dislike them, I am very wary of the govt controlling them.  They are bad enough when they conspire with the govt to decide what constitutes "misinformation" regarding things like the ChiCom virus, CRT, etc.  Imagine how bad it would be with govt control.  With Republicans in control it will be lazze faire and the leftists at these orgs will run amuck as usual.  With Democrats in charge they will become a full throated arm of the party censoring all speech not favorable to progressives.  It's bad right now but it could get worse....much worse.

I'm a Facebook user to keep up with friends.  When I don't want to see something, I don't click or like it.  This idea that social media is supposed to keep us "safe" is ridiculous.  I am also a FB share holder and I've made a lot of money off of it.  FB is just like this forum, you read some thing you may agree with, you read some things you don't agree with, but you get to make up your own mind.  In addition to their algorithm, they need to be able to put human eyes on pages that are questionable in promoting hate or giving a platform to those groups that sow hate - but even if social media disappeared, these groups would find other ways.  But they don't "make" you do anything, they don't make you believe just on the basis of seeing their message.

Parents have a responsibility for monitoring their children's social media useage.  They also have a responsibility to raise their kids with values that won't be shaken by things they read on social media.  Bullying is a problem, but that is a problem whether there is social media or not.  As far as promoting bad feelings among preteen and teenage girls about their weight or other issue, it is a parents job to help them overcome these things and not take them so seriously.

FB is a business and advertisers, and a lot of small businesses use it as their platform to reach people.  I'll bet their are a number of members of Congress who bought FB cheap and have seen great growth.

The one they really need to go after is the Chinese Tik-Tock, which is very popular with kids - and promotes ridiculous and often harmful challenges as well as other questionable content.

While I believe the whistleblower means well, she is part of that segement of society that would take away our choices.

While I agree 100% with what you posted, the reality is that far too many people get their "news" from their FB feed and that news is highly manipulated.  But it's their company and they can do what they want but I firmly believe FB, Twitter, YouTube, etc. do not comply with the requirements of Section 230 which gives them protection from liability for what is posted on their sites.  They are a publisher.  They make content decisions every day just like a newspaper or news show.  That is a protection from liability that should be removed.  And if it is they will act very differently because they will then be held accountable for what they are already doing....managing the content on their sites. Other than that gripe, they can do whatever they want.

My problem with Facebook is not with what they provide, but what THEY decide they won't allow and the lack of even-handedness they exhibit when making those allow/not allow decisions.

Exactly correct....they act as a publisher but they are not held to the same liability standards as a publisher.  That is 100% wrong.  They should not be allowed to have it both ways......claiming on the one hand they are not responsible for content and making editorial content decisions on the other hand.

If they go after FB for that, then what will they do about the rest of the media that regularly controls what you see.... and they are hardly even handed.

I agree that they like to omit the conservative perspective, but I know that going in and I'm not looking for news or political content from them.

My biggest grip about FB is that no matter what you are looking at on the internet, your FB Feed will be filled with it.  Case in point for me - did some research on mattresses and suddenly my feed was filled mattresses.  Today I did some research on shoes and my feed was filled with shoes.

Gee, try doing some research on "Republican Leadership Throughout US History"....

I understand you are using FB to your advantage, but advertisers see hits for their ads being presented to you, thus increasing their likelihood of a sale and therefore their willingness to give Zuckerfart even more ad money.  I only visit when receiving an explicit request from one of the few users I have "friended".  Have received many requests but just ignore them.  Sure as he!! gives me more time to spend on productive activities.

I was referring to.  Social media sites were off the internet for 6+ hours, employees could not get in their buildings and it had nothing to do with configurations, new sites/functions or a hack.  In fact most experts were showing evidence that they simply no longer existed.  Then all of a sudden they came back on.  Hmmmm......

this was a test, next time it will be permanent is what I hear.  It's ok with me since I'm in FB jail for a month because I provided the Ivermectin news from India!  Lol.

the FB reveal in Congress is a plant by sucker berg.  May you live in interesting times!

I was wondering why there hadn't been all kinds of threats and intimidation thrown her way and she got in front of Congrerss so quickly.  Maybe an equine from Troy?

Yes, I rarely accept new friend requests and in the recent past, I have deleted a lot of my "friends" list.  I don't need things I post blasted to people I don't care about.

Actually, I eneded up on FB, after a cat forum, which was like this one but private was discontinued.  I think I was on that cat forum for more than 10 years and over the course of time, I made some friends.  When they closed down the other site, we had to move to another platform.  But then there are a few people that I was friends with at work, some people that I was friends with at school, and now I have a few hound friends.  I don't take anything on there seriously and they don't get many clicks on commercial products from me.

I heard today that the same committee is compelling Zuckerberg to testify - or rather I guess defend his platform.  He put forth a lengthy defense statement on FB.

But yes, we went in a different direction.  Since so much of small business is on the social media sites, I really don't think they intend to shut it down permanently.  There are a couple of Lake Martin pages on FB that do a lot to promote businesses in and around the lake.  It would be a shame if they had no place to go.   But who knows what the future holds?  Maybe China was warning us.

You are right, we thought you were talking about the left wing nut that wants to be the head of a govt censorship bureaucracy......she literally said that.  As for them being off for whatever lenegth of time...don't care as they have been off for me for years now.

She is indeed a plant.  And a not too subtle one at that.  She wants to be appointed as the censorship czar heading yet another fedl govt bureaucracy controlling our lives.  I can assure you she doesn't think that BLM or Antifa needs to be censored.  She certainly would never censor the Trump Russia collusion hoax.  But God forbid some worried parent gets up at a school board meeting and expresses concern over CRT or masks or socialism......that will not be allowed.  Nor would any information about the pandemic not in alignment with whatever lies the govt is telling us. I just hope Republicans do not fall for it.....I am not optimistic.
