1st timer coming to Lake Martin from South Carolina. With the water so low..where are the hazards? I have 2 sons 12 and 14..is 'The Rock" safe for them to jump from (even at this low of water?)

Is there much current in the lake? Do most people anchor or drift when swimming?

Where are the best places to eat both on the Lake and surrounding towns?

Is the Lake a good place to star gaze at night? (city lights, haze, etc.)

What are must see and dos?

Where is the best ski/wakeboard area? (staying at Stillwaters area)

Which directions do the bad weather patterns usually come from? (southeast?)

Is there good GPS coverage in the lake? cell phone? (which service?)

Thanks in advance so much..we are excited to visit your wonderful lake. As a hydrologist for the USGS, I am always interested in water quality and conditions...even on vacation! If you see us on the lake (probably the only boat with Ohio State Buckeye flag)..please don't sink us...we're freindly!

That's a lot of questions but certaily intelligent ones.

Here's what I think or know:

1. It's never safe to jump from the Rock. Watch out for stumps left for fishing out of the main channels. Most are on maps and you will need one. The lake is not really marked that well.

2. Your kids will like Niffers( near Stillwaters). You will like Sinclairs at the Kowaliga Marina. Your wife will like Yellowhammer toward Auburn on 280. Cecil's in Alex City for you both. Oscars for burgers & fried anything (also near Stillwaters)

3. Pretty clear most of the time but you'll get more of a humidity haze this time of year.

4. Horseshoe Bend Park, Cherokee Ridge Trail (http://www.cherokeeridgealpinetrail.org/), Lake Martin Dam Tour, Children's Harbor, Anything at the Lake Martin Ampitheater Ampitheater (http://www.lmat.org/), Kareoke at Chuck's Pizza. I'm sure others will have more.

5. I don't know about wakeboard sites. There are plenty of unpopulated areas on the lake. Stay away from docks-some owners use potato
canons

6. Northwest

7.GPS- I think so. Cellphone-crap shoot

You have picked the jewel of the south. I hope you and your family have a great vacation. You will be greeted with good old fasioned hospitality!

Roswellric also handles all the Lake Chamber of Commerce duties AND offers FREE towing for those in trouble--Just kidding. Enjoy your stay. Sorry about the low water--we've got to talk with Alabama Power about winter drawdowns.

Remember not to tell your friends

Lets keep the lake our secret

If they ask - it was ugly....Right

Did you like the part about the potato cannon?

I just got back to TN from a week at the lake.

I agree on the Chimney Rock advice - never safe. I recall an article years ago in the Montgomery Advertiser of an ER doctor lamenting his stupidity in his decision to jump off the rock only to end up at an ER as a patient.

The water level made it interesting to get my boat in and out of the water as well as docking it... I borrowed a private ramp (with permission!) rather than drive to a public ramp. Unique conditions required the use of 2 vehicles to recover the boat when leaving. Also, I just anchored the boat in shallow water each day - not enough water to reach the dock by a long shot!

Cingular/AT&T service stinks around Little Kowaliga Creek area.

I recommend a tour of the dam. Be sure to call ahead and take photo ID for all adults with you when you go on the tour.

thank you all very much. We will heed the warnings of 'The Rock'. There is a 'jumping rock' on Lake Keowee near Clemson, SC that we have jumped from but it is only about 15 feet.

We are packing up today. My only regret is that we have to leave our dog (Weimaraner) behind. Our condo does not allow pets and the kennels that I checked on ( a vet in Alex. City....too far away) and a pet clinic in Dadeville (only outside kennels for large dogs) were not adequate for our needs. Ideally, we would have liked to have her swim and boat w/ us during the day and board her at night in an air-conditioned inside kennel. She is an inside dog and I doubt she would adjust well to a doghouse, especially if there is any thunderstorms. If anyone would happen to know a Weimaraner Club of America member
who could board her at night in the Dadeville area it would be great. She loves people and kids and other dogs..(but not cats).

How much is gas at the marinas?

Do the golf courses show much affect from the drought?

89 (lowest they had) at Real Island was about $3.89/ gallon last week. A dollar premium for being on the water.

There won't be the usual crowds on the lake due to the water levels, so it shouldn't be too hard to find places to enjoy all kinds of water sports. My usual advice is to stay in "big water", meaning don't hug the shorelines and stay out of the backs of creeks and sloughs. That way, you will avoid most of the hazards, both natural and man-made. A good contour map will show you where the major main lake hazards are. Remember, there is still plenty of water in the lake. Just have a good time, and enjoy the lake.

You might try calling either Karen or Patti at Lake Martin Pet Sitting Service. They know more about a doggie daycare center in Dadeville. Their number is 256-825-2697.

You might want to try Doggie Day Care. It's halfway between Dadeville and Alex. Friend has used it and likes the facility. Sure it's indoors w/AC.

Thank you VERY much. Patti put me in touch w/ Doggy Town Day care which is exactly what I was looking for...the owner Shawn Fisher and family even have a Weimer themselves! Open play all day and air-conditioned inside at night. Now the whole 'family' can enjoy our vacation!.

"She loves people and kids and other dogs..(but not cats)"<< your quote. I take that as a personal assault. Shame on you. You should raise your animals more diversified!

That is GREAT!! And more good news is that it is really a lot closer to Davevelle than Alex city. IN fact it is just mile or so from where the 'Greater Dadeville Area Bypass" runs into 280.

HAVE A GREAT VACATION!!!!

sorry Cat...I didn't train her to not like cats..it just happened!

Nice forum you folks have here. It seems that your lake community is a tight nit group, quite respectful, and enjoys good clean fun. My kind of people!

My kids are super excited; though I have to keep reminding them that there really isn't a Greenbo, Ala...though we did find Bayou le Batre. Their nicknames while vacationing in Alabama will surely be Forrest and Bubba!! (they just love that movie and thanks to TNT we have watched it about a dozen times in the last couple weeks!!!!

The upland lakes in South Carolina are experiencing the same thing. It's been that way it seems for a few years. There are six waterfalls that flow into Lake Jocassee and last August the lake was down so low and everything so dry you had to hike into the woods to find the waterfall where you always could pull your boat right up underneath them. Even on the coast, our river systems are very low..in fact I measured 'zero' flow at a creek in the Francis Marion National Forest that I had always had flow before. We could go off on a global warming tangent discussion, but I'll leave that for another time.

As I mentioned I work for the Water resource Division of the US Geological Survey. We are strictly a scientific data collection agency with no regulatory powers. We often check to see that minimum flows that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requires. Sometimes those minimum flows ( for the Tallapoosa R.) are necessary to promote aquatic health and fish reproduction in the rivers below hydro dams and sometimes hydro dams need to run more often to put more energy on the grid....all draining the Lake. The alternative might be a coal producing plant..and I don't think you really want that.

Our web site for the state of Alabama, shows the inflow of the lake Tallapoosa R. nr. Horseshoe Bend at only 70 cfs (in the %5 low flow %tile), while the outflow is 2,400 cfs (40%). So the lake will continue to drop steadily until there is some real precip. We all need a little of Texas and the great plains rains!!!
