Anyone who thinks passing a law to ban big boats, that generally sit either at the dock or in a slough somewhere minding their own business, is going to make the lake better is an idiot. I have zero respect for any fool on the other side of this issue. It would not surprise me to see others who are PO'd about this issue become disrespectful of the lake, those who live there, and smaller boats. I would not personally behave in that manner but many times that is the human nature of resentment. All that is accomplished with this kind of legislation is the angering of a lot of good citizens and further restriction of freedom in this country.

big boats, that generally sit either at the dock or in a slough somewhere minding their own business-- Anybody who belives this to be true is ignorant beyond belief.

Anyone who thinks passing a law to ban big boats...is going to make the lake better is an idiot.-- But not nearly as big an idiot as the S.F.B. who made this post.

I have zero respect for any fool on the other side of this issue.-- No tolerance for differing opinions? That's about as un-American as it gets, Pinko. Tell you what, Commie, why not take that big boat somewhere you'll fit in-- like Cuba.

It would not surprise me to see others who are PO'd about this issue become disrespectful of the lake, those who live there, and smaller boats. -- It won't surprise me either, because that's the mindset of the cruiser crowd. The only thing surprising is that you're pretending that you'd not be part of it, when in realiy we all know that you'll be leading the pack.

All that is accomplished with this kind of legislation is the angering of a lot of good citizens-- What about the citizens who are angered by the cruisers? I guess they don't qualify as good, because they don't se things your way. Typical attitude.

and further restriction of freedom in this country.-- Freedom isn't free, and operating a boat is not a right, it's a priviledge. Having a driver's license is a similar restriction; have you protested at the DMV lately?

This legislation has nothing to do with safety, enviromental concerns, or degredation of the lakes. This law is intended to limit the size and horsepower of boats in order to lure a developer to develop a Reynold's Plantation like community that exists at Lake Oconee in GA.(a much smaller lake). I looked at the bio page of the legislators that introduced this bill: Dial is a "self employed real estate developer." and Laird is "President of Ranco Inc., a real estate and development co." No I don't own a cat boat but don't mind if people do. My 28 ft boat is a pontoon.

Interesting insight.....

I assume you believe that alcohol has nothing to do with getting drunk either?

I believe that it is up to the drinker to determine the level of intoxication not the alcohol. Just as I believe that it is up to the operator of a boat to operate their boat is a safe matter no matter what the size. ( and we have laws that handle both of these if there is a violation involved) What if we introduced a bill that limits the size of the bottle(boat) and the percent of alcohol (horsepower) in wine, beer, liquor would we all be safer on the roads and lakes? People would just buy a lot of little bottles. Also, I am of the opinion that boating and drinking should never mix for the operator. I wait until I am back at my dock and all the sking is over, and I will throw down with the best of you. Take care.

In a perfect world your post makes sense. Unfortunately, "this ain't no perfect world"; therefore, laws were passed to establish an unacceptable level of intoxication (0.8) for driving vehicles and boats. In the perfect world of freedom no boating laws would be necessary. However, due to the irresponsibility of some boaters, the majority must step in and put limits on activities of the few. This bill would never have gained footing if everyone boated responsibly. Why can't people accept responsibility for their actions.

yodaddy, your great post has been faxed to all of the members of the Alabama Legislature as an example of the intelligence and communicating skills exhibited by people who want the bill defeated.

Keep up the good work, you'll help pass the bill.

Hey HoosierDaddy, just wait til all the Wake Board boats get out, when they ban the big boats. Maybe Lake Martin will become a lake that host events from all over the world and just maybe all this takes place out if front of your place.

Thanks for faxing my post to the Legislature, I and others have sent similar letters/emails/faxes and hopefully yours will be considered along with those. I am assuming that not only can they read but, unlike you, they also comprehend what they read. Therefore, the legislators who read the post willl have absorbed one more piece of common sense opposed to any such legislation that just may have a small amount of influence on them. One can only hope.........
