Last Tuesday I dropped off my 13 year old dog; a senior dog, but in good health. When I dropped him off, he was fine. On Saturday when I went to pick him up, he was seizing and in respiratory distress thanks to a kennel worker who left him outside in the excessive heat, and then lied to me, by calling me and telling he was panting hard. It took me 40 minutes to get there, and then another 45 minutes of furious driving to get him to the closest emergency vet. On Monday, I had him put to sleep, because he was damaged beyond treatment. I'm not going to name the place where I left him, but if you want to know the details, you can email me.
I think all of us make certain assumptions when we board our dogs - that the kennel people are going to keep our animals safe; that the owners will be on the premises, that there is an emergency plan in case of illness on the weekend. I had been using this facility for years now, so I didn't ask a lot of questions. And I should have - especially on the subect of an emergency plans if an animal becomes ill or hurt on the weekend. Most of the local vets are not open on the weekend. And who will make the decision to get emergency care? If you aren't there you only know what you are told. In my case, I was lied to.
So I recommend that you ask a lot more questions about who is in charge of your dog when you leave them, what kind of supervision they have, and what is the emergency plan - who decides and where will they go.
It's too late for my dog, but I don't want what happened to me, happen to you.

Someone told us it was Southern Star. Is that correct?

We have had our differences but I am truly sorry for your loss. I am sure the grief is made worse by knowing how your baby suffered at the hands of someone you trusted to protect them. I know who the culprit is and a simple search of the forum will show anyone interested who it was. Sadly the last mention of them was a glowing endorsement. I would name them publicly myself but will respect your decision not to. You can't replace a beloved pet but you could honor their memory by going to the shelter and saving another.

Thank you. I have 3 other dogs who are all rescue dogs, my latest is a blue tick hound who is being treated for heartworm.
I think the point I wanted to get across is to ask questions before you board. Make sure you know who will be caring for your dog, and what the emergency plan is, should your dog get sick or injured.

Ms. E.
Just wanted to say thank you for letting others know what happened to your dog. The employee for that kennels should be exposed and dismissed and the owners should be held accountable for their poor policies and supervision of the care of their customers pets (family members)!
A story of this sad situation posted in "The Outlook" may be another way to accomplish the above. It just might save other dogs from this terrible treatment and death.

Earlier this summer, someone on the forum posted about a Blue Tick Hound that they found. They were looking for his owner, and if unable to fnd the person, someone to give him a good home. I adopted him. It turns out he is heart worm positive, but the vet feels sure that we can treat it successful. We're in the pre-treatment stage now.
(the other dog in the picture is a Lab Mix we adopted 3 years ago.)

Does anyone know of reliable places to board dogs and cats? After Talluhahhound's experience with Southern Star, is makes me very leery of leaving our kitty there.

We had a yellow lab/golden mix who successfully underwent heart worm treatment. The key is to keep them quiet, at the medicine kills the heart worms and if the dog is quiet the pieces of dead worm will be absorbed over time. Too active and they can collect and cause a blockage. Keeping that dog quiet was a real challenge!

That's the thing that worried me the most. He is a young dog. What did you do to keep yours quiet?

Kept him in the house and supervised his rare trips outside. Wasn't easy and a couple times he kinda let loose and I worried he had done himself in...but thankfully he made it through it. Good luck with yours!

I looked at them, but they only have two cat cages and the are connected so the cats could get at each other and the cages are right out front where it is busy and sometimes they let a dog or two loose in the office. Just not a good environment for my kitty.
Thanks for the reference though. Before Patty and her partner had Howl in Moon they would come to my house to take care of another kitty we had. With my older kitty, we would feel more comfortable if someone was around her at least during the day.

Check with neighbors or friends that have a high school student for your cats. This is what we do and they come by everyday, check the mail, and check water and food for our cat. We board our dog at Mitchell vet in Tallassee and have never had a problem.
