Subject:   Charter Basic Cable HD Channel

I have the Charter basic (?) cable that goes to about channel 73 (plus two other higher ones) at Lake Martin (Dadeville/Alexander City). No converter box, just the cable. I put a new LCD high definition TV in recently, and after running a setup channel scan, I'm getting quite a few high definition channels that are not listed anywhere in the listing/etc. that I can find anywhere. Anybody know where to find out exactly what is being sent in some kind of listing guide that would be available to print out or look at? Seems to be at least represenatives of all the major networks (and some not so major) from here or there, and ESPN and ESPN2. All in true high def.
Thanks

Sage - Charter has absolutely no idea what it's doing. They don't know what is going to your house or what there's billing for. I have accounts with them at home and at the lake. More often than not they confuse the different service levels. I usually have to straighten them out once a quarter or so.

Thanks,
Did that, and it showed exactly the same as my onscreen guide did, but no digital HDTV channels whatsoever shown that I am receiving. Almost like "phantom" channels. They are on the new on-air digital channels that everyone went to several months ago, and in full hi-def. They are displayed on my TV like "23.2", "34.4", "95.1" etc.(not really these, just examples). The TV of course has the new digital tuner.
Thanks

Many cable companies have these "hidden" channels unencrypted that they would prefer you not know about...only those who do not go through the cable box and who have an HDTV set discover them after scanning. There is no guide except for the one that you make for yourself...also, you should re-scan occasionally as these channels are frequently being changed around. Eventually, these channels will disappear altogether so enjoy them while you can.

You are getting QAM channels with your digital tuner. They do change them routinely, so you will have to rescan occasionally. Enjoy

Run for your life. Please see Cablebusters in Dadeville before your "real" problems start.

Lamont...what's your problem with Charter? I've had Charter since I bought my place (2004) and have never had a problem with them. As a matter of fact, I have cable, phone and internet with Charter and am happy as I can be with their service.

Do a search from about a year ago and you will see my incoherent ramblings about Charter. All started with a 6 month DSL internet deal from Charter. Finally resolved when a Forum member, can't remember who, told me to get the Better Business Bureau involved. All of a sudden a 5 month ordeal was settled within a week. Can't tell you the disdain I have for those people.

it was almost exactly a year ago when I was having my "minor" disagreements with Charter. The post was on 11/26/2008. Never had a real problem with the Cable TV but, just pray to your Heavenly father you never have to deal with their customer no-service.

My bill suddenly went up $25. So I called the billing number and ended up in a electronic do-loop. When I finally got a human, it was clearly someone in India and someone who could not speak English as we know it. I finally got transfered to someone who must have been in the US. She found me a new deal that reduced my bill below what I have been paying.
While I was ultimately satisfied with the outcome, it took me a great deal of patience and about an hour on the phone to get there.

Not limited to Charter. Your communications problem is the same with any global company these days, even the used-to-be iconic, General Electric. They are all the same, ship it overseas, the " h" with the customer, we are saving money. I am in Manoy Creek and have had Charter since 2003, I live in Montgomery 5 days a week and have had Charter since they first came to Montgomery and am a fully satisfied customer.

Thanks for the info on the "hidden" QAM channels. I called myself knowledgable on these things, but did not know that this was a regular thing for these channels to be hidden from all the guides. I have Charter in Opelika also (with a Moxi box or decoder on other TV's), but hooked the cable directly into my HDTV, ran a channel scan, and found essentially the same thing here.

about the communications problems. Calling for technical support to any major company will put you in India real quick.

I had Comcast when I lived in VA, and it was about the same as Charter. I've been lucky not to have any major problems, but one woman in VA grew so frustrated with Comcast, she took a hammer to the customer service representatives computer (and didn't get any jail time.. LOL)

I have to say that once I reached the right person in Charter, she was very accomodating and pleasant.
