Just taking a poll on what is the best furniture to put on the pier. I'm in the market for a couple of chaise lounges and a table and some chairs to go under the gazebo. I would like something heavy enough to leave out during the summer (Minus the cushions of course) when we leave. And I want something that is going to last. I've been considering teak and have also been told that cast aluminum products are good. Also, if anyone has any in good shape they are looking to sale for whatever reason, I'd be glad to hear about that also.

Thanks and have a great day!

Good teak is the best and will last over a hundred years and requires no maintenance. It is also heavy enough not to blow away or into the Lake during heavy winds. The only conern is with theft since individual pieces are valued at four and five hundred dollars and better. The other danger is falling trees or large limbs that could cause damage. Other than those two concerns, it wil be a one time investment in life. Wish I had more than the three pieces that I own. I do not know who sells it in that area since I bought mine in Maryland and hauled it to the Lake. Oh, I almost forgot squirrels will gnaw on it (dang it).

Take a ride over to Harbor Pointe and checkout the park-like benches out front. While there a few weeks ago, my father noticed the bench, primarily the wood. He has strips of the particular wood but didn't know what special way to use them; now he does. The wood is some type of Brazilian hard-wood. Extremely tough, good amount of weight, lasts a very long time, has an amazingly good natural finish, basically requires no maintenance, but, may be a little pricier than Teak. Its so dense that trying to put a finish on it, e.g., stain, is difficult due to the wood repelling the stain. There was some type of technical name for the wood but it escapes me at the moment.

I'd checkout this particular hardwood, just for low-maintenance and durability, supposedly longer than teak.

I have a pier that doesn't have a railing. Seemed to me that a nice wind could blow all the furniture into the lake.

Went to Lowes and bought a "wrought iron" bar height table and chairs and strapped (pipe strap) down the table to the pier where I wanted it.. When I leave I just run a cable throught the chairs around the table and lock it up.

The wood you are referring to is Ipe. I am very impressed with its qualities and appearance. I considered using it to deck my pier but that is awful pricey. I did find a site that sells Ipe furniture and the price was comparable to teak (maybe a little less). Just do a search on ipe furniture and you will find it.

Yeah, who needs that pesky rain forest anyway? Let's cut it down so we can have dock furniture that we're too lazy to take care of.

Yes Burran, We are open to your thoughts and recommendations. Your post was not very helpful to the question. What is your suggested solution?

Do I have to limit it to just ONE suggestion? Because there are so many. You could buy furniture made from a wood that comes from somewhere other than an ecosystem that is among the most endangered in the world. You could take a few minutes each summer to treat your wood furniture with one of the many preservatives that are out there. You could cover your furniture when not using it, or expend a little energy and carry it up to your house, or a shed. Or you could opt to get furniture made from a non-wood material; wrought iron, plastic, etc. If toting a few pounds of plastic up to the house is too much trouble, it can be tethered to your pier with cable and a padlock, as can all furniture, no matter the material.

I wish I could find it hard to believe that you couldn't figure some of this out for yourself; it only requires a little thought. Of course, a LITTLE thought is asking a bit much of you, isn't it?

Possibly you did not give it any thought or you would of responded with your recommendation and reasons why in the beginning instead of the pursuit of negatism and attacks. The poster ask a legitimate question. Some of us attempted to respond with responsive thoughts to the question. I am of the understanding that a majority of the loss in the region you refer to and its environment is not for the harvest of wood but is for the clearing of land for farm use and mining operations. I do agree with many of your concerns for the environment. It is important to all of us and we should not waste it. Some do take the cause to extremes in many opinions to include my own.

I did not read the initial posted question as a discussion of the environment. You are correct it was not something I was considering when I responded. It makes enjoying this Forum and sharing on this Forum difficult when you have to give great detailed thought about how someone else is going to take that post, disect it and post an attack in return. You can make your point effectively without the sucker punches or the nasty come backs in an attempt to belittle others and bolster your own self-importance. Please give thought to pleasant treatment to other as you do the environment. Peace

Can you stand one more possibility? How about cement. I have a friend on the lake that has cement table with cement benchs. It is very attractive. It was cast with designs on the edges of the table and it has an exposed pea gravel top. I have observed it over a five year period, and it has weathered well. They sometimes place cushions on the benches for comfort. It will never blow away, and you don't have to be concerned about inclement weather. The bad news is that each bench weighs about 200 pounds, and the table weighs close to 400 pounds.

I've visited that part of the world, and seen the damage the strip land clearing is doing, I agree. Wouldn't support the product personally.

at my house in B'ham i have cast aluminum I purchased in San Diego, it was pretty expensive, however, the only damage it has on it is from the movers who moved my home from san diego to here.

Great stuff!!

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! Hey.... and Feb. thanks for going up to bat for me and the rest of the posters on this forum. It is interesting how a simple & innocent question creates such adversity in some!! As my 8 year old says.... "Did someone not get his morning coffee?" Ha
Anyway, thanks for all of the responses everyone! Have a great lake day!

Why don't you go to this site and make your own judgement? http://www.ipe-furniture.com/whatisipe.asp

You also might check to see if your man Kerry has any Ipe or other exotic woods in any of his wife's many mansions.

There is a manufacturer of wrought iron in Wadley, AL (can't remember the name right now) that makes nice outdoor furniture at a good price. It is a small town, so only one--can't miss it!

Feb, and you were doing "...pursuit of negatism and attacks...."?? When the subject is about conspicuous consumption, and that's what pier furniture is IMHO, the impact upon the environment should be a concern. Thanks, Burran...
