I have an 18' Maxum w/ a DIY-wake retrofit tower. I want to put speakers in w/ an amp. Amps need grounded. They come w/ a ground wire that looks to need grounded to the motor. Wouln't that cause a hum of motor noise in the speakers? I have heard about a 'ground plate' but cannot find one? Under the dash with the rest of the controls...there are circuitry boards but nothing that looks substantial like a 'ground plate' sounds. Would grounding it to a ground post on one of these boards be enough? Thanks!

I have amps in my boat that are grounded to the battery. The positive wire is also ran to the battery. You need to use 8 guage wire.

how far are you running your wire from your battery to amp?

I have three amps and they are all grounded to the battery. You will not have any 'hum' or other noise as long as it's grounded directly to battery. It also doesn't matter how long the ground wire is. Hope this helps.

Engine noise is heard in a stereo system because of "ground loop", If you have hum there are many ways to overcome the hum, one way is to purchase a "Ground loop Isolator" from a stereo store. They go inline with your RCA connection between the head unit and amps. The purpose of the "common ground" grounding plate in the reference is to ensure that ll components have the same "potential". Keep in mind that your head unit should also be connected to the same points. I would suggest running 4 gage wires to your amp rack and use a high quality power distribution block, and grounding block. Run power and ground from head unit to the same blocks.

If you still have engine noise, there is a chance your charging or other electrical system has issues, as a failing alternator or faulty ignition wire will cause this also...

Have you tried running the system on A/C current? It will sound better....
