We just want to say thank you to the EMT's, the Sherrif's deputies, the boat patrol, the awesome people on the pontoon boat whose names I don't know but who helped us with our son who was injured on Sunday afternoon on the tube.  How any of us stayed calm is a miracle and God was definitely there with us.  His injuries could have been much worse.  As it is, he received in the neighborhood of 1000 stitches from Dr. Blythe in Opelika.  Carson was very brave through it all and he is doing fine.  Thank again to everyone who was there for their help and for their prayers.

Sounds like a horrible injury from riding a tube.  Can you please give more details on what happened?  My kids have just gotten old enough for tube riding and I like to know what is possible so I can avoid it.

I am curious as well. What happened?

I would like to know how that happened also. Let's see - 1 death at Anchor Bay, one broke arm at one of rope swings on Manoy Creek ( grab rope wrapped around young boy's arm and broke his arm when he got hung up as he let go ), and 1 young person in stiches. Not a good weekend. We have to do better, folks.

I was pulling my son (12 years old, 5'9, 170lbs) behind our pontoon boat which has a 60 hp motor. We can't really go fast. We had been out earlier and came off the lake because I felt like the traffic was too much. Alot of jet skis and boats with much more hp and alot more maneverability than I had. I had pulled the little kids and was pulling my oldest. He was up on his knees adjusting his life jacket and was not holding on but he had done that all summer. I don't know if the tube hit a wave wrong, I don't know if the rope possibly had some slack or got caught on something but he went down and the rope came up and he hit the connect we were using between the tube and the rope. It's a metal quick release which I should have known better than to use but in my experience at the lake (43 years) making sure the rope wasn't in danger of breaking was the biggest issue. When he came off, I didn't know he was hurt but was coming around as fast as I could because of the traffic. We saw him and heard him then. Fortunately he got his first aid badge at scout camp this summer and knew to put pressure on his wound and my watcher on the boat had also just had her safety first aid course for school. They both knew not to use a towel if possible to stop the bleeding (I didn't). We got him in the boat and headed for the dock. The early pressure on the wound kept him from going into shock. We also didn't have a blow horn on the boat (have a horn but it's not that loud). We have a fire extinguisher which I know it is required. I don't know if the horn is but we will be putting one on anyway just to get the attention of people on shore. It was the one time this weekend when we pulled up to the dock that no one was there. Hope this helps, ask me anymore questions, and I'll take any advice/criticism given. It was simple grace of God that it wasn't worse - Alice

Thanks for the explanation- Yes, a horn is required onboard- the louder, the better. I hope other tube pullers will take notice and remove the metal quick disconnects, as they are extremely dangerous. They make one without metal, however, I just attache the rope directly to tube and use another rope if need be. I speak for all the forum members and boaters in general, may God bless you and your family as all of you go through this odeal. " HE " was indeed looking out for your son that day.

Sounds a lot like a true freak accident.  Only advise would be to consider a plastic one (where rope loops over it) which probably wouldn't have sharp edges.

I am really happy to hear that your son, for the most part will be "alright".  I can't imagine a young person receiving a 1000 stiches!  Bless his heart!  As I am an Eagle scout myself, I am excited to hear that his recent first aid training came in handy.  I bet never in a million years did he ever think he would use it to save his own life.

All in all, I think you and your family handled this very well.  An injury of this magnatude could have certainly had a different outcome if you all hadn't acted calm and quickly.

God Bless and we hope for your son's speedy recovery,  Thank you for sharing your amazing story.

Did you really mean 1000 stitches?

I wish it was a typo but there was so much damage where everything was pulled back that it took that many to get everything back where it needed to go.  The doctor had to do a lot of repair underneath.  No permanent muscle damage and the scars are along his jawbone and under his chin.  The injury was about 4" long and to the bone.

I'm sorry you're son was hurt but thankful he will live. Some have not been so lucky. I pray for a speedy recovery.
