One interesting design difference in the floating piers on these lakes, which you can see in these photos, is they detach. Well, pretty much any one can do that, but many are specifically designed with this in mind.

Visited a friend there recently, and he actually has what is similar to two huge hinge-pins that he pulls out of the rear of his piers' "finger", floats it out and secures it with two crank-operated temporary "pilings" driven down on the two rear corners.

Cool design, but let's hope this sort of measure doesn't become part of the norm on Lake Martin due to huge and regular fluctuations!

I've noticed the same thing about the floating docks on other lakes even in Alabama. It seems to make a lot of sense!

Many Corps of Engineers lakes only allow floating docks , because of large lake levels fluctuations--and I guess they can run you off with little effort. Some have bicycle size tires on the end of the ramp so you can move the dock further out into the water as the lake goes down. Little late for Lake Martin.
