My internet has been sloppy for weeks now, but it was really bad at the first of last month. I put in a service call. The guy came out. I told him it was an intermentent problem and at that moment was working fine, but might go out at any minute. He told me he had been to two other houses on my street already that day and it was in 'the hard line'.

When I looked at this months statement I had a charge of $26 for 'service call'. I called them and got somebody in customer no service. He kept insisting it was a legitamite charge. I asked how that could be when the problem was in their "line". He looked up the service ticket and asked me why I 'refused diagnostic'. I told him I didn't and related what the tech had told me. Three different times he claimed that they were not going to remove the charge since I refused diagnostics. We went back and forth several times and he assured me he was 'reading the ticket that was generated after the techs visit'. I assured him the ticket I signed said 'problem in hard line'. After several minutes of 'disscusion' that was growing more and more heated I made sure to 'rattle' the ticket I had in my hand so he could hear it and said "well lets compare our tickets", and then read off the ticket number and tech number from the sheet I had signed. Immediateley he said, give me just a moment and I will credit this charge.

Bottom line is, if I had not kept that ticket and let them know that I had absolute proof of what I signed I would have been stuck with that bogus charge. Now whether this was an isolated case with a crooked tech, or an institutional method of boosting revenue will never be known. But if you call them out, make sure you keep what you sign!!

And for the record, my connection is still crap. It won't even hold a stream for more than a few minutes and the majic jack phone is useless.

If you are already familiar with the telephone/cable TV/Internet access network, just delete this and forget it, OK?
HiSpeed Internet access (cable modem) is an "ADD ON" service that was added onto existing Cable TV networks that are coaxial cable based and run throughout most neighborhoods. Coaxial cable has an upper limit to transmission capacity, and each subscriber who subscribes to new Cable TV or High Speed Internet, Voice over IP, or other services immediately eats into the max capacity of the cable.
I'll bet if you track the time of day that your service "slows down" or quits altogether, it will be consistent with some event, like the Kids getting out of school and logging on, or lunch time, or commute time, internet geeks getting home (5:00 to 7:30PM), something.
At some point, the up/down coax "Pipe" gets clogged with users and starts slowing down and getting confused, thus, maybe, your problem.
The solution is a bigger pipe (fiber cable/wireless/satellite). And, Cable Companies Telephone Companies are already laying fiber cable at Martin, at least in the Parker Creek area. Solves a lot of bandwidth problems overnight.
Perhaps if your Tech Person knew just a little about his own network, he could have explained the problem and given you some encouragement to keep your checks coming in??

Charter maybe you only option for Internet access, if it is all I can say is good luck.

Long story short had Charter in Bham for like a year. Had nothing but problems and my area of Bham had a large pipeline --I was one of the first on it.

Had sporadic outages sometime several per week, answer from Charter issues in your area (I knew more than their phone techs did and that is scary to say the least). After about a year of such and giving them every benefit of the doubt, finally had enough and actually ended up with the Network Operating Centers Manager and Head Technicians cell phone numbers.

I would call them when my connection went down and they would dispatch a tech to my house day or night and weekends They rewired the house, rewired from the street to the house, changed out all the connections inside the box. Still did not fix the issue.

So after about 4 months of this I now have AT&T DSL for the past 3 years or so and I would have to say up time is around 99.9% and never any sporadic outages.

Know this is not the answer you wanted, if Charter is your only solution, but good luck as I have heard nothing but horror stories with Charter Internet.

Mack,

My place is down Coosa Hwy 20. I currently have Charter Cable and I was quite excited to see AT&T lay fiber down Hwy 20 last year. I talked with an AT&T service tech this summer and he said that DSL was not yet available, at least in our area near the end of Hwy 20. He said the thing that necessitated fiber is they were running out of copper lines due to the new development in the area. However for now, the fiber terminates and switches to copper behind the Eagles Point development. He also said that many of the AT&T upgrade projects were on hold except where necessary to increase line capacity... Dang corporations trying to pinch the penny!

If you know or hear of DSL (or fiber) being or becoming available in our area let me know. I'll do the same.

Unfortunately Cahrter is the only game in town. Trust me, they have been here MANY times, and like at your house, have tried it all. I even have a 'booster' in my attic becuse, 'my house sits so far off the road'. Funny thing is, all the other houses around are right in line with mine. Charter reminds me of the old Marcus Cable I used to have. After complaining to the city council about them for months, I was appointed to chair a committee to find a new service for the town. Shortly after our orginazational meeting it was announced that Marcus had been bought out. Bet you can't guess by whom........CHARTER. That was 15 years ago in another town. I am going to get in touch with my county commissioner and ask that they start searching for a new provider for the area. My bill also jumped over $30 this month, not to mention the bogus 'service charge'.

Web, AT&T cannot by rule earn revenue on that fiber until they place service on it. You can bet that they will not want to let it lie fallow. It loops around Bywater road also.
The large beige telephone box at the very end of HWY 20 serves everybody today from the Needleye area to the Narrows area on the West side. I suspect that the fiber actually terminates at that box.
When the economy comes back, that site will be capable to offer not only DSL, but Digital TV, packaged with voice service. They just gotta' have a lot of takers to justify replacing the old box.

I have a friend that works for Charter and he really takes pride in his work and company, but with that said, outside of a very few they sure have some clowns working for them as well, We had dumb and dumber out to our place as well, One actually acted like a stalker, he scared the heck out of my wife, he would just gaze at her and never say a word, even when she would ask him something regarding our problem, she reported him and they said they were sending out someone else right then, that's when dumb showed up. Pathedic! the problem persisted atleast a year, Josh basically reworked everything from the road to our house and still had issues, it was better than before but the limited line space makes sense to me.
