I was at the lake this past weekend and noticed a small flapping fish at the water's edge in the weeds left exposed by receding water. When I got up to look at it the fish was in the jaws of a snake. It had obviously snagged this fish and was dragging it out of the water to eat it. The snake was brown with a pattern, light colored belly, about 20 inches long, with a bit of orange around its mouth. It slithered away too fast for me to grab a camera and take a picture of it. Anybody got any ideas what this snake was?

I know that snakes have been discussed extensively on this forum, so I apologize to any of you who are sick of the topic.

thanks
KRC

We've seen a similar snake in our slough. My neighbor calls it a diamond back water snake. There was a man who posted on the forum a few months back who seemed to know a lot about area wildlife. I wonder if he is still out there. I think he wrote a book on the subject.

I think that you are right. The link below is a great photo of one.

Surprised how much it looks like a CM. The eyes are not eliptical, I would make sure though.

I think a nice short barrell 12 gauge pump would take care of it...

What do you mean if his eyes are eliptical? I can guarantee you that this gal ain't getting' close enough to gaze into its eyes! I'm a big fan of the business end of a shovel. (shuddddder)

In the August edition of Lake Martin Living, he says that he found a new Russell cabin on Lake Martin, so maybe he's still around. But in September he writes about his mother's death, and according to a post I read here last year, Russell Lands will take a cabin away in such cases, so maybe he doesn't have a place after all. Too bad if that's true; he has written some funny and touching stuff over the years.

If anyone out there is in the know, please fill us in; now I'm curious.

Okay,...I've heard all about the snakes on the lake all summer.
THANK GOODNESS we aren't in the same slough with "Happy Camper". All it would take is ONE snake, just one, and I am outta here! We were at the lake today cleaning out, and all I could think about was the picture of the snake I saw on the website "Conaty" mentioned. My dang calves hurt walking on my tip toes around the yard all day. Every stick, every leaf that moved, everytime the water splashed on the sea wall, got my attention. I have NEVER been so aware of my surroundings!
Now, I just have the nightmares to look forward too!

The kid next door is an expert, and he told me that the most common water snake on Lake Martin is, far and away, something called a Midland Water Snake. He said that there are few, if any, Diamondback Watersnakes on the lake; they are more abundant in the eastern part of the state.

And I hate to tell you this, joyrider, he also said that if you are in this state, much less on the lake, you are pretty much surrounded by snakes. He says they are found everywhere, and to prove his point he showed me a picture of a six-foot Rat Snake that was caught in downtown Birmingham!

An old wise man told me one day "loud boats run snakes away". May I have permission to remove my mufflers?

WSMS is right...snakes are all around us (thank goodness, or else we would have terrible problems with rodent infestations!). My wife and I differ on this opinion (as she expressed above, regarding a shovel). Without exception, anytime I have seen one (not that I go out looking for them), they always seem to scurry off as fast as they can.

they're everywhere!!! My daughter was in her English class at the high school yesterday, when a 3 foot snake slithered out from under an overhead projector they had in their class.
When she told us the story, my son asked "what color was it?",......
she said "snake colored!" YEP! She's blond!
Our neighbors (at home) have told us about killing cotton mouths, rattle snakes, etc,.... but as long as "I" don't see them we're okay!
My husband killed a 5 1/2 foot rattle snake with 11 rattlers and a button in our backyard a few years back,.....we no longer live there!
Okay,... that's enough,..... I'm freakin' myself out.

Yes CATBOAT, you may take your mufflers off and kick up the uh um,... "water" in front of our place, whenever you get the urge!
After a few pink pantie pulldowns, not only does the vision go, your eardrums also go numb with the rest of you!

Joyrider....since you have more snake "sightings" at school and home....the logical conclusion would be to just stay at the lake!!! Yeah...that's the ticket (maybe I should try that , too.)

He says "Snakes are deaf, so loud noises don't bother them."

I'm thnking that maybe the kid next door should be the one writing a book! But so far, he seems fine with doling out free information, so I'll be happy with that for now.

They don't call me Happy Camper for nothing! Actualy, the exact opposite is true when it comes to things that slither and crawl. I am terrified of snakes and have been known to walk on water if I think one is nearby. I've seen (maybe) two real snakes this season and dozens of turtles and dock line pretending to be snakes. My hero was a fellow who came along fishing in a pontoon boat, saw a REAL LIvE snake in the water and sliched it in half with the tip his fishing pole. Now that is a real man!!!
