You want to know why tuition costs are so high and these kids (and parents) are leaving school saddled with debt?
Auburn University in Montgomery has built a “wellness center” for
its students - and of course its faculty.
The 21 million dollar, 73,500 square foot facility features
a rock climbing wall, a vortex pool, as well as a huge cardio and work out area
with dozens of machines and a basketball gym.
The Wellness Center is only open
to the AUM Family: students, faculty, retired faculty and alumni.
They also offer friends of alumni memberships (contributors), but
wellness directors say they want students to feel as if this is their gym, so
they won't offer membership to the general public (In other words the
taxpayers)....BTW isn't that a golf course I see out one of the windows....

From the article "The university started construction on the 73,000-square-foot center in February of last year after the student body voted in favor of increasing their student activities fees to cover the center's $20.6 million price tag." Nothing about using tax money.

Thanks for that information. I looked for funding info before I posted and I didn't see it on any of the sites I found. The enrollment there is what...5,000 students? So that would be about $4,000/ per student according to my defective calculator plus base operating expenses of say...$10/SF plus all the specialty maintenance items like the pools and staff that doesn't come cheap. I would say it's about $1,000,000 per year and I think that's conservative. That would be additional fees of $200/ year per student just to maintain it. Now some of that would be offset by paying customers but I'll bet they would rather join a club near home. I'm not saying what you saw wasn't said but the numbers don't make any sense to me.

One year Friend of AUM Alumni Association Membership
One year AUM Alumni Association Membership for those who did not graduate from or take for-credit courses at AUM.
Price:$50.00
It appears that you can use the wellness center with this membership. No idea what cost, if any, is to use facility.

I read ~$30-50/month depending on your status. How many adults are going to buy a membership in this club to be around students when they can go to other clubs? I think this is for the students and faculty of a 5,000 student sattelite college. The taxpayers and student loans pick up the tab. Is this appropriate for education? In this economy? This stuff is flying under the radar but sooner or later will become unsustainable. Right now the cost of projects like these is being passed to the students through these tuition loans..and later to the taxpayers. It's just more evidence of this debt binge the country is on.

I have a daughter who is a graduate of AUM. It is a good...no, excellent school and she got a good education.
As to the "Wellness Center" or whatever it is called, I wonder the sagacity of same. AUM is a regional school...of the four AUM graduates that I have immediate knowledge of, none resided on campus. Maybe AUM - again an EXCELLENT school, is reaching out to become something more than a local college. If indeed no taxpayer dollars went into the Center.....then what is wrong with progress? The GOOD kind of progress GF, not the Obama kind.
BTW, do either of you reside in Montgomery, or even Alabama????? Just curious.....

You need to read what I wrote before you jump to any conclusion. All I posted was that taxpayer money was not used and how to become a member. I think you just like to post without reading. I am not a resident of Alabama. Any other issue or issues with my post?

Goofy, I have been listening to the MSNBC drivel for about 45 minutes tonight. I am really trying hard to not get emotional about the lies coming across the air. Evil, just evil.

I know the feeling. Kinda like watching Hannity, Liimbaugh, or reading the Forum. Last week, I watched a lot of hours viewing the Olympics on NBC and MSNBC and ended up watching some of Mathews and Rachel. First time I ever watched Rachel. I never seem to learn anything from FOX. EIS, or MSNBC as they appeal to their hard core. Most of what they do I call pandering to their base.
Wow, from a new wellness center to lying on TV. This tread has been hijacked.

I would say thinking about it twice would be good. Great educations were not the subject. That might be a great place to get and education. But that doesn't justify loading up the kid's future with debt for luxury amenities that are not pertinent to ther education. A rock climbing wall? Give me - no - the taxpayers and the students a break.
