Have been following this with some interest because having the NSA engaging in spying on media they don't like is particularly scary.  Media response was as predictable as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west.  However, the NSA and Psaki responses were chilling.  Psaki chose to remind the reporter that asked the question that the NSA was a foreign intelligence agency and then referred them to NSA.  Not exactly a strong denial which means they are likely concerned that he has actual evidence beyond an anonymous whistleblower.

The NSA response was about as bad as Slick Willie's "I never had sex with that woman".  And their apparent refusal to directly answer his question about whether they are reading his personal emails was even more telling.  They too I suspect are concerned that Carlson has hard evidence.  Otherwise, their response would have been a blanket denial.  I saw a lawyer that had marked up their response which is attached below and is spot on.  A non-denial denial, carefully crafted in case he has actual evidence.

As a young Air Force Captain in 1971 I was fortunate enough to attend the three week National Communications Security Course at the NSA Friendship Annex, adjacent to what is now Baltimore-Washington Airport.  Obviously there are many things that I cannot divulge, but if this is true, the NSA has gone terribly wrong and way far away from the NSA I experienced in 1971.

NSA is also expanding tremendously.  Google (or preferably DuckDuckGo) NSA Georgia, Whitelaw Building Fort Gordon, GA, or NSA-CSS Georgia.  I did computer security work there as the capability was being activated, and all I can say is wow.  Huge facility.

Bottom line:  while I have faith in our military leaders, they may, because of civilian control of the military, have to do things they aren't comfortable with.  I believe this may be one of those situations.

While I'll stipulate that we haven't seen hard evidence, it does cause one to wonder given the pathetic non-denial denials.  Someone is clearly not willing to stick their necks out and call BS on Carlson's allegation.......my guess is they fear he has hard evidence and is waiting anxiously for them to do so ala Project Veritas.  Then he will pounce and heads will have to roll.  No one wants to be that person.

Oh, and I never use Google or Bing....never.  It's only Duck Duck Go for me.

It doesn't really surprise me that NSA would not give a direct response.  I dealt with NSA off and on over the years, and from my experience they are really closed mouthed about most things especially what they do and who they do it for.  It's entirely possible that the secrecy has permitted expansion of their mission.  Keep in mind that NSA is able to access all electronic communcations, but for the most part, the agency doesn't capture the communications of ordinary citizens, unless they are a target.

If what Carlson suspects is true, the last part of your last sentence may no longer be valid, and that is very troubling.  I agree your statement reflects the NSA that used to be, but is it still the case?  I hope so, but maybe it isn't.

NSA launched a massive expansion in the months and years before they were told they couldn't collect metadata on phone calls within the US.  I suspect they were gearing up to be able to handle unbelievable amounts of data, but have no basis in fact to make that claim, just a hunch...maybe from a position of a little more knowledge than the folks on the street, but nothing concrete.  Will be interesting to see how the Carlson caper develops and whether it gets (probably none) any attention in the MSM.

Rest pf the MSM is going to ignore it.  If the do discuss it, as it already has been in the twitterverse, it will be to make fun of Carlson.

Like most demonrats - they only care when they are the target - as long as the target is acceptable to them, it is not newsworthy.

I think your last sentence is the key point.  In their non-denial denial they said he wasn't a "target" of NSA spying.  That is a far cry from they are not reading his emails.  That's the thing with what the NSA and other agencies do, they are "targeting" someone and capture all the emails from US citizens that interact with their target.  As I said, I haven't seen the evidence but Carlson claims his anonymous source told him about the content of his private emails that he could not have known unless they were accessing them.

I suspect that Carlson's intent was to put them on notice that when or if his emails are selectively leaked that they will be held responsible.....as if that would ever matter.  That alone may be enough to get them to abandon this little political project.  If it's all true, then this source is a true patriot.  If not, Carlson will have lots of egg on his face.  Not sure we will ever know.
