In today's edition of the Opelika-Auburn News, I offer the following quote included in a letter from Sam Nichols to the editor concerning the Cash for Clunkers program:
"It is ill-conceived, deceptively promoted, has unintended consequences, creates chaos for its intended beneficiaries, and subsidizes special interests with taxpayer liability three times the original amount (so far). In other words, it's a typical government program."
In thirty-six words or less, that's a masterpiece.

Let's see. Someone who can't afford a car worth more than $4,500 gets a deal from the gov. He buys a $30,000 car, has a $25,500 note, after the rebate, with $600/mo payments. I guess we'll see the clunker bail out in about a year. Buying votes, got to give them democrats credit.

25,000 note for the car, 5,000 for the wagon wheels and tires, 2,000 for the stereo. Yup, time for another bailout.

and those that decide they can not afford a new car and keep their clunker are screwed ... because they are destroying the ones turned in, so parts for old models will not be made and they will not get their clunker repaired.
So then, just like healthcare, the dems think we need a government option to keep the private sector healthcare "honest" (that made me laugh just writing it), so then we will need government auto dealer to keep other dealers honest. Oh wait, we have that. Not that you will ever catch me in a showroom of Government Motors.

Wait a minute WW. I work at GM dealer and NEED your support! I am hard working american taxpayer. Please reconsider your position. My baby will need shoes soon. :( The CARS program has been somewhat of a mess that is for sure.

An opinion piece critical of the program..."You can always tell a well-informed man. His views are the same as yours."

I wonder if it is considered a clunker if the wheels are worth more than the car itself?

The wheel payments were more than the car payments (or gas bills), and I am sure there was a run on junk yard wheel sales...
