On a completely different note, a recent study in an AMA Pediatrics Journal by a University of Pennsylvania researcher indicated that abstinence only programs work substantially better than any other program in preventing teens from becoming sexually active. The results of the study indicated that after 2 years only 33% of the abstinence only subjects were sexually active versus 55% of the groups that were provided other programs.
Some details of the study:
1. The researcher is an African American and all his test subjects were African American. The study was peer reviewed and brilliantly devised. The researcher expressed complete surprise at the results but unlike the climate change fanatics stayed true to the data.
2. Four groups were created and test subjects were randomly selected. The groups were (a) abstinence only, (b) safe-sex, (c)combination of abstinence and safe sex and (d) a general health class. The programs were not morally based but were secular programs (i.e., they talked about pregnancy, STD's, and did not delve into morality-based reasons for abstinence).
3. The statistics for the latter three groups were essentially the same which proves that providing a mixed message (i.e., abstinence along with safe sex) does not work.
4. All subjects from the four test groups that became sexually active exhibited the same practices regarding birth control (including the 33% of the abstinence only subjects) disproving the canard that if you don't teach them safe sex they won't do it.
I can only offer this observation and that is our school (private independent Catholic) uses an abstinence only program and in the nine years we have had our kids there I am aware of only one pregnancy (from a student that left the school). I am quite sure there is more sexual activity than that but my observations are at least consistent with the study results. By the way, we have about 600 students in K-12. Not a big school but big enough. It is very diverse economically and racially and there are probably 20% non-Catholic students.
Please don't start posting criticisms of the study methodology. I have not read the study, only reviews of it and interviews with the researcher. It was peer reviewed by a very prestigious medical journal so I would go there if you want to critique it. In reading about the researcher's background there is nothing to suggest he is an abstinence proponent, at least before the study.

I am alittle lost on this one. If you abstain from sex you do not get pregnant. Anything else increases the odds. True for Libs and Wings. What is unfortunate is that 33% of those who were in the abstinence group became sexually active which is quite high compared to 55% of the other groups.

If the 4 groups consisted of 100 each, then 33 of the abstinence group had sex or 33%. Let us assume that all of the 100 in the safe sex group had sex, that leaves 65 remaining to reach 55% of the 300 (300*55%=165). Of the 200 left the 65 represent 33% which is no different than the abstinence group.

I'm curious what an "abstinence only" program entails. Does this mean that the only sex education that student receive is that that they should abstain from sex, with no other information provided?
Or does it involve taking an abstinence pledge?

GF, I don't know the answer other than to say that 33% of the abstinence only group was sexually active in the next two years versus over 50% of the other groups. How they compiled that analysis I do not know. All I can say is this study was peer reviewed and the methodology and results were confirmed. The guy doing the research is supposedly a typical Ivy League researcher and is not a pro-abstinence person.

Hound, there are a number of abstinence only programs that cover the gamut, including ones that include a pledge. As for this one, my understanding from what I heard is that it was a methodology that included a secular-based description of the ramifications of sexual activity with a pitch to abstain, period. None of the "its better if you abstain but if you don't here's how to protect yourself". This was a carefully designed study to eliminate potential biases.

GF, yes it is unfortunate that 33% of the abstinence only group became sexually active but unless you think it is a good idea for 13 to 15 year olds to be sexually active then I think logic and reason would lead you to support an abstinence only program. What is even more telling is there is no difference in the use of birth control or condoms to prevent STDs with either group. So there is no downside to abstinence only programs and plenty of upside.

As each one of you has read through these postings, in your mind you have pictured a young girl. How many of you thought of boys?
…and one in five of them have Herpes simplex 2 (HSV2). Only one in five of those one in five have symptoms - the other four are clueless... but infectious.

At that age the pressure is enormous. More than we ever can imagine. Sex is casual, normal, expected… they call it “hooking up”.
Abstinence is something you must convince yourself that the young lady is strong enough to practice.
And, you pray for her safe-keeping.
