Did anyone listen to the NPR* Morning Edition Report on Canada's healthcare system? It was a story which touched on both the good and bad. For the half dozen or so on this forum with open minds it would be an eye opener. The most interesting stat was from a Commonwealth Fund study of the number of fatalities resulting from delayed medical attention in the 19 most advanced nations....USA no.19, Canada no.6!

Yeah yeah, I know "liberal bias"...Well they gave a report on healthcare that included a lot more negative facts about Canada than old "We distort, you comply" has ever given about our system. Seriously, listen in on occasion, not only will you be surprised at how often comments are made which have to be considered negative toward Obama (such as a story on how Obama has actually cut Superfund Clean-ups compared to Bush that is to be heard on this afternoon's "All Things Considered"), but you might actually learn something.

I've always liked NPR. I used to listen to it when I lived in VA when I was driving. They often have some interesting pieces on "All things Considered". And I think they used to do a science piece on Tuesdays.

Interesting there was a doctor on CNN that practices in Canada and the US. He said the government system in Canada can not hold a candle to the US. He said costs are controlled through rationing, there is no multiple tests if someone is having a problem, they basically have one shot at a test and then they have to get in line again. He talked about people that have cancer and have to wait 2-3 months to start treatment.

He spoke of the government turning more and more over to private enterprise. Also that there are still "pay for care" doctors, but only wealthy people can afford it to eliminate line and the wait. So how is that better than today?

I was in a couple of places over the last year with over a dozen Canadians. After brief introductions and NO prior political talk, whenever I met a Canadian, I asked about their health care and if they were satisfied.

100% - yes, 100% of the Canadians that I asked are very satisfied with their government health insurance. Most of the folks were 55+ in age, but not all. One person went on to say that he read in the paper of someone from Canada coming to the US because they couldn't get care (reminded me of stories that I read about surgeons in the USA amputating the wrong leg or replacing the wrong knee). But he went on to say the he had his hip replaced - took about 2 weeks to schedule it - and the care is wonderful.

One of my friends works at a telephone company in Florida. She told me there are many Canadian residents that vacation in Florida. In fact, they stay 6 months MINUS one day to be sure to be able to keep their Canadian health coverage.
