Found this monster floating in Sandy Creek between Lakeshore and Shoreline Drives. Looks like it came loose from the line that was holding it in place. Would ahve made quite a mess of a boat if you hit it. PM me and I will tell you where to gather it up. Bring help caus that thing is heavy.

Actually got connected with him via Nextdoor. Turns out someone hit the bouy while driving their boat too close to his pier and cut the line. Whoever was driving that boat has some damage for sure.

Just a question, will the person who put the buoy out there be responsible for the boat damage?

Agree that boats should not be operating within 100ft of a pier, just asking. Maybe I'll place a few ferrocement markers around 50ft, to be on the safe side. :-)

I believe the (grossly violated) limit is 25 feet from the dock. I have seen some 100-150 feet out and in one case, I think in Pitchford Hollow, a house had several acres marked off.

Nope. The bouy was less than 20 feet off his pier and totally legal. The person that hit it was an idiot coming that close to his pier in a slough that is probaboy 200-300 feet wide where he is located. He told me the Marine Police had approved it. Turns out it was made from a pontoon boat pontoon. Very clever use of an old pontoon.

Shouldn’t be allowed to use anything that could damage a boat.

Maybe not but marine bouys in the intercoastal waterways are made of metal and lots of rivers have markers in the middle that are large wooden posts. If you stay away from piers it won't be a problem. And even if the bouy won't damage the boat the line that holds it can get wrapped on the prop. Either way, according to the owner the MP approved his bouy so it must be legal.

You have a source on the 25'? I'd love to put some out, you'd be amazed how many folks run by at 10-15 feed in our slough.

I’ve heard Marine Police say 25’ from outer edge of dock, boathouse, or floater is approved. If a boat or motor is damaged by buoy, that simply tells driver to stay away. Want to keep ‘em away...use stainless cable and concrete block filled with concrete to anchor float....violator will still be there when you get home, wake up, etc.

I have a small bouy about 15-20 feet off my pier. I used a 5-gallon bucket filled with concrete with an eye bolt and rope to anchor it. Works like a charm and it does keep people away from our dock which is good because we are up a slough and its not all that wide. I'm with you that no one should come within 25 feet of a dock unless they are stopping there. These bouys really help.

I don't have a rock-solid source, but think either the maritime police or the Alabama Power shoreline management office in Dadeville would be able to provide definitive guidance. If you do get it from them please share.

Some years ago in another state, I wrapped a chain around a double cinder block, used a quick link to connect the chain, dropped it into the water, and then chained an empty propane tank as the buoy and painted the tank to make it more visible at night.
I used the bouy to moor a boat in the water.

Mark Fuller of the Alabama Marine Police confirmed via telephone that buoys can be no farther out than "25 feet from the end of the dock".

Would you be able to provide a little more information about the 25ft. limit? Does that mean one might place a buoy beyond 25ft. or that one can place a buoy up to 25ft. from their dock but the Marine Police is not going to enforce that?
