I'm going to build an addition to my wood deck to accommodate my assortment of grills and smokers. The usual 3/4 wood deck floor is worrysome from a fire hazard standpoint. Any of you guys have a suggestion to a material that could be substituted for the 3/4 decking?

Are you concerned that a grill/smoker might get knocked over? Decks at both the house and cabin are 5/4 boards, and have not had any issues. You may want to lay down some Wonderboard, ceramic tile and use thresholds under the grills..,

For my charcoal workhorse I use a Weber and I get sparks through the vent holes occasionally. I have trees and get leaves up under the deck so I'm concerned about ignition under the deck. Hard to get under the deck to clean it out too. I thought some surface that could be hosed off would be convenient too.

I use a generic grill mat at the house - is supposed to be flame and oil resistant... Another option would be to put metal roofing under the deck (attach to the floor joists) - angle down on the outside edge to allow drainage, this would also give you semi-dry storage.

I did my whole deck in tile a few years ago....no worries about fire, leaves and pine straw don't fall through or get stuck between boards, no staining, and easy cleaning.

Here is a picture in progress. First we reinforced the joists and sloped the framing while doing so.Then primed 3/4 inch tongue and grove plywood was screwed down. plywood was covered with roofing felt. 5/8" Durock was layered over felt and screwed down. Joints were taped and a layer of thin set was added. Thin set was painted with a rubber type coating made for tile wet areas and showers (providing a water tight barrier). Tile was set directly on the coating and grouted.

You have to look at facebook for that one.....it happened within about an hour of taking the second picture in the last set. I was trying to slide that piece of plywood (middle of the picture under the glue tubes) when the tendon snapped.

Some might good suggestions. McGill ...very impressive. I'm not in your league but I might get some good ideas there/. Thanks for the pics!
