This is in response to a post below.

Of recent the economy has slowed .... but until the democrats took over congress, it has been the longest economic expansion in the history of this country ... even longer than the last great Republic president Ronald Regan.

You are partly right on the feds ... they do lower interest rates to stimulate the economy ... but they also lower rates when inflation is in check. Both were happening ... we had an expanding economy with low inflation. The feds have stopped lowering rates, in fact the next move will be up, not down.

The other reason rates are moved down is to weaken the US dollar. That helps exports and makes imports more costly. While that helps US jobs, it also adds to inflation since we consume so much more than we can produce, it raises prices of imports.

Guess what we import a lot of OIL ... yes the weak US Dollar from lower interest rates drives up the price of oil and what you pay at the pump. That is why we need to drill more in the US and import less. What the republicans have been saying for some time.

Since interest rates have been stable and are projected to rise, the US dollar is getting stronger and oil has come down from $148 a barrel to $101 today. After the hurricane passes, assuming no bad damage, oil will settle in at $70 -$80 a barrel. Still too high, but until we approve more drilling or reduce consumption, that is probably as low as it is going.

And yes, the stronger dollar will make imports cheaper and probably hurt some US jobs ... so expect to hear the crying about that.

But that my friend is how the economy and economics works.

Next lesson will be why raising taxes would kill us as Obama proposes. Yes even if it is only on the top 5%. Those are who creates the jobs. Redistributing wealth (socialism) does not work. It will drive money over seas where it can not be taxed rather than invested in the USA.

Lower taxes on businesses is good because it allows businesses to be more competitive, create more jobs. It also lowers inflation because who pays for the business taxes ... you and I in the products we buy and then they are taxed again with sales taxes that we pay with after tax wages we earn.

That is three layers of tax in just that example. There are even worse situations. Yet Obama says tax businesses and the "rich" more so he can redistribute to people that do not even pay any taxes right now. But the NEED it. Yeah, that will really incent them to do better. USA is the land of opportunity for anyone, so lets take more away from those that achieve and give it to those that have not. That will be GREAT for the economy and really incent people to get ahead so it will be taken away from them.

This is the best that the #4 man at Emory Law School can do? No wonder Mercer always takes the Moot Court Championship.

I guess you want us to concentrate the wealth in the top 1% and become the new Mexico

I bow deeply to your desire to educate the unworthy. Republicans love tax cuts. They love big business. And they love Lobbyists with deep pockets that make them love big business even more.
Big business loves to make big profits. One way that you do that is moving your technology and work to a lower cost manufacturing base, particularly ones that don't have good labor laws.
And yes, when the dollar is weak, foreign buyers love to suck up US technology, goods and services. But they still want a quid pro quo, usually in the form of offsets. And they love us to import cheap foreign goods that we taught them to make. But, if the dollar gets too weak, then foreign currencies that are pegged to the US dollar get weak too. And that's not good.

Do you try to act stupid or are you that way naturally??

No one said a weak dollar is good or bad ... just pointed out the cause and effect.

And no republicans don't just like BIG business. The like business. In fact the biggest part of the Bush tax cuts that Obama wants to reverse was incentives to small businesses by giving them section 179 write-offs on capital spending. It started at $200,000 a year and grew to $250,000. That stimulates investments that create jobs AND it grows SMALL businesses that also create jobs.

Small business, not big business is the driver of job growth. That is what republicans support.

Now take your foot out of your mouth and stick back where the sun does not shine. That is where it will be safe.

You are so dumb this is getting tiring. You are beyond help so just stop.

And yes ... Republicans do love tax cuts ... and you should too. Republicans wants LESS goverment and therefore less taxes to reduce the tax burden on people so they can keep more of what they make.

I personally would rather keep more and spend how I want, rather than giving it to the government so the can spend it how they see fit.

If you feel you d not pay enough in taxes, did you know you can write a check and send it to the government. They will take it. So why wait until they raise your taxes ... just do it now. Go ahead send it in. I am sure they will spend it wisely for you.

Oh geez, you found me out... I'm just naturally stupid... LOL. You are too much!! I do believe big smart you is just trying to bait little ole me and as you point out, I don't have a brain in my lil ole head... (batting eyelashes) Shame on you!
Since you seem to know all the answers, I'm really surprised that McCain didn't tap you for his VP. Or is he going to make you Deputy Secretary for Republican Fantasy generation? . .. geez, with you in an official position (in lieu of calling me names on this forum) there's no end to the things you could do... I'll bet the Fed Chairman has your number on speed dial -- in fact, I hear your phone ringing -- they're probably calling you now to get you to solve the foreclosure mess.

"never argue with an idiot, bystanders might not can tell the difference."

This woman spent her entire life, like her husband feb, feeding at the public trough. They have NO IDEA what the real world is like. They live in a fantasy world where government is the solution to all the worlds problems. They can't grasp the concept that goods must be produced and that the government produces NOTHING!! Well nothing but bloated beauracrats and politicians to suck the rest of us dry.

LIke I said below, welcome back elsie, some of us have missed you. Don't worry, your husband is still here showing his ignorance but it nice to see you guys have found somthing you can share in your retirement.

Thanks for the info. That explains a lot. Those that depend on the government always feel they are "entitled" to more. Rather than work harder in this great land of opportunity, they would rather just get on the Obama band wagon of taking more from those that have earned what they have, so they don'y have to work harder than put their hand out.

Please explain to my why you and WW feel the need to belittle any and everyone that does not agree with your point of view?

Why is it that the most vocal segment of the Republican party seems (note "seems") to be the far right that has absolutely no tolerance for ANYONE who does not see their side and more specifically does not agree with their side?

If you do not agree with the views of either yourself or WW, then you are an idiot, a cow and I am surprised to see that you did not question the religious beliefs or patriotism of anyone that disagrees with you.

What continues to amaze me is that your segment of the party continues to give all the credit to your party when things go well and blame any and everyone else when things go south.

You are doing absolutely nothing that is promoting your party and by your attacks on others make it extremely difficult to find anything positive about the Republicans. When I hear and read your rhetoric and the just sheer nasty comments you make about anyone who disagrees it simply turns my stomach.

The question I would like to ask you is if you guys are representing your party and you are filled with so much disgust and apparent intolerance for anyone who disagrees - why would I, or anyone else, want your party to represent me?

will await your response - but am sure it will be filled with vile, you seem to know no other way to communicate with anyone who does not agree with you, let along not confirm your superiority to everyone else. Just a news flash, you are not always right - get use to it.

you are so for from the mark it almost seems crazy to even respond. I am as for from the religious right as one can get. I am not a republican. I do tend to vote republican in national elections (thats presidential elections only), but vote the man or waoman depending on their stance.

If pointing out facts about someone is attacking to you, then you MUST be a democrat. To you guys, pointing out ones history or record is 'attacking' them. She worked 32 years for the DoD, that's inside the beltway liberalisms' natural habitat.

sorry to disappoint - not a democrat and not terrible impressed with any of the choices currently before us.

but I have really yet to read anything intelligent or correct that you have chosen to post.

Your post about Palin and college was wrong
Your post about Obama and campaign funds was wrong.

Exactly what "facts" have you brought to the table?

So you are upset that Obama has only 143 days in the senate? Well, he was in the Illinois senate from 97-04 and then won his place in the Senate which he served until he was nominated.

But you might be right, look what happened to us when we elected someone whose political experience before he was elected president was that he had only been the Governor of Texas... you must still be so proud of THAT choice.

A public service career is something someone like you and some of your cohorts could never understand. Some of us care enough to serve. Others just run their mouths about things they don't understand and then try to wrap themselves in the flag of patriotism.

And do not bring Feb into your hissy with me.

While I may agree with the discussions relating to the Democratic Party, as I do not support their positions, I do not support the Republican positions either. We must look at each Party where we can find both the good and parts of each.

With the Republican's not supporting the inrease of taxes they have made this country the biggest debter nation in the world. Over the last 7 years we have borrowed one & one-half Trillion dollars from China to pay for the Iraq war. This debt will start to come due in 25 years for our children to pay. This is the same as though we all took out 2nd, 3rd and 4th mortgages on our homes to buy all our desires. The problem is we can live well today but we will collapse in the end.

Neither Party will discuss the real problems in our society. Social Security financies, Medicare costs, Medicaid costs, ballance of payments, national deficit, failing education, illegal people in this country, lobyists money on both Party's sides, etc.

Neither side encourages me.

What is great is that you are entitled to that position.

The only comment I would have related to what you said is "because the republican oppose increase in taxes it has made us the largest debtor nation"

First, I think you are refering to our national debt (spending vs taxes) ... because debtor nation really refers to balance of trade with other nations ... that is a whole different issue and relates to our consumption as a nation vs what we produce.

But going on the premise that you mean national debt ... your statement assumes the government spending is a given and the only choice is to raise taxes to balance the budget. You are right that is what the democrats believe. The republicans do want LOWER taxes and LOWER spending. The republicans want LESS government and the democrats want more government.

Would it suprise you that more taxes (in total dollars) are being paid to Washington today under the Bush tax cuts than they were under Clinton? That is a fact. The same happened after Regans tax cuts. Lower taxes on businesses makes us more competitive in the global economy (debtor nation) to export more, which creates more jobs and people paying more taxes. Lower taxes on individuals gives them more to spend so they buy more, which helps businesses be more profitable and pay more taxes. It works.

The issue is the size of the government. No one wants to cut their pet projects and the bigger government is the more power politicians are. That is what needs to change.

You will notice that the democrats will say the just want to return the "rates" back to a level we had during Clinton. They do not say the government is collecting less tax revenue ... because they are collecting a lot more. But they seem to think that if they raise taxes it will not have a negative impact on people or business and all will stay the same.

Keep in mind, even if spending did stay the same and the higher taxes had no impact on people or business (which would not be the case) then people would have less to invest and save. Do you think that may have an impact? Sure would. Less savings means higher interest rates, means people can't afford that car or house or if they spend more on the higher interest, then it is less to spend elsewhere.

This is very simple and the democrats really play to the general publics ignorance and lack of understanding of economics.

One last point. I say all the people that feel they are not paying enough in taxes to stand up and help their country. You can right a check to the IRS and mark it as a donation to the government. They will take it. My guess is you will send nothing .... the reason being is you don't want to pay more taxes ... you want someone else to pay more.

And jsut what is it I don't 'understand'?

For the record I tried to join the armed services TWICE, but was denied on medical both times. Once at 19 and again at 26yo.

"Public Service" should NEVER be a career, even in unelected positions.

I would be careful to differentiate between Republicans and conservatives. I think if we learned one thing over the last 8 years, it is that not all Republicans believe in limited government. I don't think it would be unfair to say that our national debt is a result of a combination of the tax and spending policies of Congress unfortunately aided and abetted by the White House (for example, prescription drug coverage, education spending, etc.). I have never and can't ever imagine voting for a Democrat but I have been wildly disappointed with Republicans that have abandoned conservative principals and gorged themselves at the government trough (RINOs). The only thing worse is the Democrats.

So if you replaced Republicans with conservatives then I think you are dead on. By the way, I admire your desire to educate the economically illiterate but look at their candidate. When reminded by Charlie Gibson that increases in capital gains taxes actually results in lower revenues to the Federal government he incredibly still would not back down. It is all about "fairness" which is the incomprehensible idea that it is fair to steal money from the productive to redistribute to the unproductive, all at the point of a gun. Class envy, big government, stick it the "rich"......it's all so tedious.

Just curious, were you paid for your public service or did you work for free? My wife worked for USEPA for almost ten years and while salaries were 10%-15% below comparable private sector work when you included the benefits (health insurance, TSP, personal leave, vacation, etc.) and the fact that she worked no overtime it was a pretty good paying job. Unless I am missing something the government doesn't seem to have a problem filling every job posting making me believe its not too bad a gig.

There you go with nasty FACTS again Martini. And she nad her husband now draw three checks from the treasury. I know a lot of folks in the private sector that worked a lot harder for a lot less.
